You will have to explain that one.

There was me thinking that we have had a majority of 'Right leaning' governments because Labour are currently and historically a bad joke.

It's just maths; the majority (by dictionary definition, not the political meaning) of the country vote for left-leaning parties in nearly every election, but first past the post makes that irrelevant, because usually ~40% of the country voted for the Tories.

I'm sure that a popular Labour Party would still win an election, as they have occasionally managed in the past.

There are just as many who would vote for a party further to the right if they believed that they would get representation in Parliament. The current system makes it largely pointless to vote for anyone other than the two main parties.

Exactly.

People have short memories what about when Theresa May was held to ransom by the DUP plenty of complaints then about minority parties having too much influence. Then of course there was the famous Tory Lib Dem pact when free students fees got tossed out of the window a key plank in Clegg's manifesto.

PR means that minority parties get too big a say and the voters may find like the Lib Dems that what they voted for gets crushed immediately due to back room haggling.

Why didn't Tony Blair introduce PR he had plenty of time?

FPTP is not perfect by any means but as long as you have a majority government you get policial stability.

And instead we have a government which the majority of people didn't vote for, with a total mandate to do what they want - PR is not without it's problems, but it's infinitely better than this faux democracy s***e.

There's a reason the majority of the world use proportional systems.

It sounds like you're in agreement that it's a s*** system then.

Left leaning yes I think that's true.

However, if given a choice, most people would also eat a cake rather than broccoli.

Mind you I've just made an argument for authoritarianism which we already have too much of.

I don't know what the answer is....Is there actually an answer, it's just what we like as individuals really....We just want our ideas implemented and we're happy to turn our eyes away if it's messy.

I think it's why ultimately I favour city states as the human end state, in some ways, similar to the US model....it's closer to the human condition.

That way if you want to be a mainstream lefty, far lefty, mainstream righty or far righty it's just a relocation. Everybody gets a home in a way.

Though obviously there are significant issues with the city state idea, not least security....but within a general decentralized worldview I like it.

VAT is a regressive tax in that rich or poor you pay the same amount. We have the perfect opportunity here to scrap VAT on energy bills and also the green tax as a measure to assist those who need help the most.

If Boris or Rishi are worried about the loss of revenue then put it on income tax which is the fairest way over raising taxation anyway.

You don't have to buy a Rolls Royce if you can afford to good luck but you should also pay VAT. There is no choice on certain essentials, energy being one of them.

Boris is wrong.

Well said Badger my man, well said!

She is much smarter than she appears.

With her as PM you would get socialism, not pathetic flag waving and yet more social contracts (for the rich).

And doesn't the UK badly need it?

Attlee, Wilson, Blair we need a successor.

Indeed we do Steeleye, indeed we do!

Yeah....but I can just about remember the seventies.

When the boot was on the other foot this country went to ruin.

Mind you....

Ha, mind you indeed Stirling, mind you indeed! Yeah, I remember the "right to work" march through Croydon- "what do we want? The right to work-when do we want it? Now". Quite sad actually.

The age old argument against PR is that it would inhibit anything ever actually getting done.
