Current Government provides next to nothing. And see what the free-market has done to energy prices, fuel prices and food, etc.

The free market did not invade Ukraine

Do you remember a thing called Covid and furlough payments ,all the rage a couple of years ago.

I think thee current Govt is incompetent but they had some external factors making life difficult

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Those were factors, but financial experts (I heard on the radio around 18 months ago,...sorry no link) on the radio were saying the UK economy was failing even before those events kicked-in. Key indicators were noticeable before these events.
I do acknowledge that the events you list were massively significant, yet also provided a convenient smoke-screen ?

In a bid to drive down inflation, the Prime Minister said that pay boosts should only be offered to staff who improve productivity.

I totally agree with this so by my calculations MP's and Civil Service employees owe the taxpayer a rebate

Financial experts is an oxymoron usually

Hearing an opinion doesn't make it true

You might just as well use a fortune-telling pig as a 'financial expert'.

A-level chaos as Tories accused of widening gap between rich and poor pupils.

Rishi Sunak’s government was accused of making the country’s stark educational divides even worse, as this year’s A-level results showed a “growing disparity” between the most and least advantaged students.

when will we ever learn?

Or that Covid just bumped up the results? I know my son, who got a straight run of 'A's at GCSE's in that first Covid summer was rather pleased because he had, by his own admission, given up on French altogether and had pre-warned us he was probably not even going to get any grade at all?

I am a happy to blame the Tories for all sorts but this? Nah. Just a sign that things are going back to how they were, for both good and bad.

Your last line says it all really. Many chavs are convinced their life is sorted so don’t actually care or need to bother or just Maybe trust an algorithm. Instead of teachers bigging themselves up about their abilities. That is where the comparison is made. what is a disadvantaged student?

I broadly agree.

I also don’t really understand how you can draw any sort of conclusions based on a single year’s results - surely you can get any level of variation in achievement from year to year, and so even if a correlation exists, it’s not exactly proof of anything in such a small scale.

I’ve no doubt there is a link, but a single year’s exam results are not proof of any change.

A friend sent her twins to private schools in Dulwich both got excellent grades.

Yes they were lucky to have parents who could afford to do that (both parents came from working class backgrounds) but I know that they worked really hard to get their grades.

Pupils who go to private schools tend to be motivated. Put a lazy kid in with a class of hard workers and they will work harder.

Perhaps the issue isn't about rich or poor kids or what their ethnicity is but about the culture at that school. Do the teaching staff foster the work hard ethic or do they let the kids play the victim.

Yes indeed because, as we all agree, "aren't you just fed-up with experts?" What do they know? Lol.
