Is The Godfather Best Ever Gangster Movie?

I read a feature over the weekend reminding us that The Godfather was first released in 1972. So it celebrates it's 50th birthday this year. Hard to believe that this remarkable film was made so long ago. Makes me feel old! Many great scenes and performances and it tops numerous 'best gangster movie' polls, even 'best movie' lists. I'm a fan, but there are plenty of other fine movies in this genre. Even Godfather 2, which many prefer to the original. Some of the early black and white movies with the likes of James Cagney and Edward G Robinson were good in their own way. So, how do you rate The Godfather and if it's not your favourite, what is? And what is the standout scene in your opinion. In any event, if you haven't seen it in a while, this 50th year since it's release is a good excuse to catch it again.

The Football Factory - Not really a gangster film admittedly however never has there been a greater opportunity for an actor to play out the delusional reality in their own heads as Danny Dyer in that. Love the Godfather, great film but love TG Part 2 even more so, especially RDN's performance as a younger Vito. There are a few up there I have enjoyed over the years so without ranking or particular order: Classics
Donnie Brasco - Given it's based on a true story it has an air of realism to it without indulging in too many Hollywood dramatics. Goodfellas - One of my favourite films of any genre. Public Enemies - Again based on a true story so thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of it. A Bronx Tale - Another hit (no pun intended) from De Niro and co. American Gangster - Good ol' Denzel
Lock Stock Snatch - Actually quite like Snatch Layer Cake The Business
Once upon a time in America - Brilliant film all round Pulp Fiction - Typical Tarantino fun A history of violence - underrated with Aragorn in it The Warriors - Cult classic In Bruges - Some decent comedy in there too My two cents... and a bit more anyways! Donnie Brasco is not only a true story but the scenes are in the typical bars the Capo’s would hang out in/work and plan their crimes and scams. With digital and online crime and drugs this doesn’t happen anymore. Goodfellas was realistic because it is another true story. There’s money still on Henry Hill’s head, wherever he’s on witness protection. But the mafia love all this, even if it’s of them being done over. Edited by Rudi Hedman (21 Feb 2022 3.51pm)

A couple of other new london films. I quite enjoyed Avengement. Superhero type level abilities in fighting but I still enjoyed the fight scenes. Easy 90 minutes viewing. Just how do they act out locking an arm and breaking it the wrong way at the elbow? Saw Wild Bill recently. Another easy watch. The fight scene at the end in the pub is slightly more believable. There are some people that crazy who could pull that off but against a criminal gang and that many? Unlikely. One actor in this genre who isn’t typecast. Edited by Rudi Hedman (21 Feb 2022 7.42pm)

Great movie Michael Caine is such a nasty bar steward. On the dvd commentary the director, Mike Hodges, said that the man responsible for the denouement on the beach (no spoilers) was in the same train compartment at the start of the film which I've always thought adds another level.

I prefer The Long good Friday, Goodfellas and Scarface myself tbh Also any London Gangland film with the underrated Craig Fairbrass is always a better watch for me I know it’s almost sacrilege to compare with these, but even those with the comic element like Lock stock and snatch I could watch again, although good films, I wouldn’t fancy sitting through the godfather films again
