All fair points. We'll need to see how things develop next season with fitness before drawing too many conclusions but we have definitely benefitted hugely this season from a broadly injury free season. Stark contrast especially in defence where Mitchell, Guehi and Andersen have been close to ever present. Part of me thinks we may have got away with it slightly this time as our defensive cover has been very very thin this season. My memory of last season was that we actually started out playing some decent stuff with decent results and the injury crisis transformed us into something of a - highly ineffective - parody of Royball. Prefer to judge RH on his body of work rather than the memories of how it ended! Good point on a team in transition. A major flaw in the current set up is the inability to see games out. I'm struggling to remember any matches we've won against the run of play and can recall all too many winning draws. This is probably indicative of a team that is unsure of itself but is also a top down thing. PV has been very good in the most part but he has to take some flak for our inability to see things out. The team needs to learn but so I think does the manager - he's still in nappies really in the top flight.

To be positive Freedman's eye for an affordable promising player....at least for Palace....has always been impressive and who knows what additions will be there. Olise, Mateta and Eze are exciting fixtures for the future....so we have the attacking aspects well covered and that's the main concern for most clubs. We also have exciting attacking talent coming through our academy. Instead we need strengthening in the McArthur/Gallagher role and at right back.
Edited by Stirlingsays (21 Mar 2022 10.10am) Yeah, Gallagher's gone. He deserves his chance at Chelsea who are clearly his first love. I just hope by the age of 24 he is a proper starter. I'd hate to see him in U23 football, with the career clock ticking away as he waits for his big break, a la Loftus Cheek. IF we were to ever sign Gallagher, I think it will be in about 3 years time, if his Chelsea career stalls and our stature is half decent. I actually think Zaha will go when it suits us. As he ages, I see it more likely he'll become a squad rotation player with us than a signing elsewhere. He deserves to score the winning goal in a cup final more than anyone else.

In terms of the league table and results, after 29 games last season we had 3 more pts than we have currently and had won 10 games to our current 7. This season of course the football we have played is more progressive and supporters have been provided with far more entertainment than in recent seasons.There is positivity in the air!

Dougie has down a fantastic job on recruitment last summer, he now has his work cut out replacing Gallagher, who he struck gold with last year.

I think most people that watched last seasons games and this seasons would agree that we were very lucky last season probably 10 points more than we deserved and with this season the opposite applies.

I think we are a far more attractive proposition for the best young players (and supporters for that matter) as a result of the progress being made in so many aspects of the club. And don’t forget the fantastic academy too! We may even end up with a new main stand over the next couple of years as well. (okay I might be getting carried away a bit there)! One thing is for sure though- It really is a great time to be a Palace fan and I honestly believe the best is yet to come. It’s very exciting!

Interesting stat that. We definitely could tighten up at the back late on to convert more draws to wins, but we did also concede the 3rd most goals in the league last year. This year we've shown a bit more confidence in going after the 2nd goal which has sometimes allowed us to get a 3rd and a 4th as teams try to pick us off - Watford, Spurs, Everton, Norwich have all taken a bit of a pounding off us. We picked up a bit of a habit of letting in one - we've conceded about half as many goals but our rate of clean sheets is only 28% vs 21% last year. That maturity looks like it's built up a bit in recent weeks (Wolves, Brentford, Everton, City-ish). Keep that maturity up and we'll turn those 1-1s to 1-0s. We look more dangerous every week too as the young lot up front get used to the league.

Really interesting stat that. My take is that game management has been iffy most season in close matches. This is a factor of the team that lacks experience but PV also needs to take a fair share of the responsibility here. He too is pretty callow in management and how the team copes in tight situations is definitely part of his role and I'm not sure he's there yet.
