And ever since, the entire 'enviromental' movement has been designed slag off Nuclear whilst pushing alternatives to fossil fuels that are so ludicrous as to be beyond belief. A great example is 'Friends of the Earth'. Started with initial funding from the head of an Oil company. And focused from almost the beginning on being anti-Nuclear.

The Petro-Dollar has corrupted almost every major nation in the world and is not going to let that influence go without a fight. Look how the world sucks up to the likes of the Saudis. Barbarians on almost any and every level concievable.

And if you think I am talking out of my arse, answer me this. These current JSO arseholes. Imagine inventing a 'protest' movement that makes me as angry as those dickheads do? Genius in someways.

Also do a little research. The two leading lights in the current wave of nuclear technology are Russia and China. And who is the West trying to pick a war with?

Our political elites sold their souls to the Arabs decades ago. And we are all effectively in bondage to that.

Real freedom is independent energy capacity. And that is being taken away from us, month on month.

It always amused me when they showed that polar bear on that tiny bit of ice. Trying to make out that he actually lived on it.
They really do think we're that stupid.

Unfortunately the kids in school are being brainwashed. So that doesn't help.

Just stop oil are made up of middle class privalged people who have a nice little life already. They don't have to worry about working or providing looking at their general age.

They are promoting the government basic income - which will happen if they get there way.

Nuclear is not a magic bullet. It also comes with many problems. Main one being efficiency and cost these days – it's just not as viable anymore from a financial perspective, per kw/h. Let alone how long they take to build, managing the waste and decommissioning. Business and industry follows the most profitable and viable approach, and that is a renewable/storage/nuclear energy mix, probably in the region of 70/30.

Should it be an important player in the energy mix, absolutely. Should we be moving towards A mix of nuclear, wind, battery, solar, hydro etc. yes. Will gas turbine power stations still have a role to play from an energy perspective for the next 15-20 years? Yes. Will it eventually be phased out to ensure more energy security as well as reducing environmental impact? yes.

Nuclear fusion would be great but the time money and resources required to get there (no guarantees) could probably pay for most of Europe to convert fully to a renewables mix twice over. It's also potentially massively destabilising (like AI) whoever gets there first creates a massive power imbalance.

Petro influence is indeed a big problem but even they know the game is up, and have done since the mid 00s. Hence the attempt to build future supercities and nonsense like the Neom Line (look it up) to try and become sustainable away from oil and gas. Jury is out as to whether that will work long term as everyone moves away from their resources and if it fails that could be massively destabilising.

Essentially, no simple or easy answers, but certainly some paths more logical and attractive to business and investment than others.

Also a quick fact for you – guess who now leads the world in investment and deployment of renewables? China. They are heading in the right direction, a mix of nuclear and renewables. Latest projection with increased investment in both leads to around 20% of energy production coming from Nuclear by 2050, which is their target date for being carbon neutral. I'd imagine the remaining 80% will be renewables, maybe with some fossil fuel carbon capture thrown in there as I think they'll find it very difficult to wean off coal entirely even by then.

Nuclear is important, but as a key supporting player in the energy mix.

An interesting post. The bit you missed is that whatever we do, we must ensure that everyone gets all the energy that they require as cheaply as possible.

Chin rub moment on exactly how bad is climate change. The line about putting the environment against wildlife protection is very telling. If it’s as bad as they say there will be no wildlife surely. Me thinks it is the bollox I’ve posted all along.

We are surprisingly having a cool wet summer, after July 22 temperature reaching 40C for the first time I feared the worst.

Europe, Canada, others having extreme conditions.

We may have got lucky with the position of the jet air stream in the atmosphere protecting us from the extreme heat in Europe.

Nicely sums up the issue.

I assume this was turned down by the Welsh Labour government so the nasty Tories can't be blamed this time.

Everybody wants renewable energy as long as you don't build anything near them or impact the views / environment.

My message to the Green, pick a bloody solution you're against everything and for nothing.

The issue is human population growth. Pure and simple.

And until the bullet is bitten zip will Change.

Watched the series Earth with Chris Packham. Interesting final episode.

40% of the earth's land that is not frozen is now farm land.
95% of all mammals on earth are either us, domestic pets or farm animals.

All that is to feed us. and it needs to keep increasing.

Population has increased from 1b to 8b in 200 years. The increase is now running at a 1b increase every 12 years.

It's not going to be long until we run out of land and resources.

Cut the growth to zero and the energy requirements stay the same. Carry on as we are and we are chasing shadows.

It seems that people can only focus on one thing at a time. Currently its fossil fuels creating CO2. But what about deforestation, methane, population growth, forest fires.

Its like kids playing football. They all chase the ball.

I was always suspicious of Fox's mints but I'd never stopped to consider they were just a tool for propaganda. Taste was always a bit off which is the giveaway.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Whilst population growth is undeniably a massive factor, it's far from the only one, and the idea that nothing can change unless that does is demonstrably untrue.

You're also doing exactly what you're accusing others of - focusing on one thing within a broad, complex topic with many variables and factors.

There are many campaigns and movements tackling deforestation, forest fires and pretty much every other climate-related issue - the fossil fuels stuff is only so prominent in conversation currently because the protests have made it so... the protests that don't achieve anything that is.

Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely some difficult conversations around overpopulation on the horizon, but I don't think it's a golden bullet that solves the problem overnight, and there are plenty of wins we can achieve more easily in the meantime.

Since the last time, usual nonsense

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.
