According to some here the Conservative Party isn’t right wing but another iteration of the scourge of liberal democracy. They have always had a noisy hard right faction whose views tend towards the attitudes I listed but were moderated by the need to compromise with the larger group on the centre right. Something that looks to be nearing its end.

Claiming Y-L was right, possibly. Most don't. You look at the effect of mass immigration on this country and see everything that was predicted come to pass. That is not to say that some migrants have not been of benefit to this country or that we should close the door to everyone. What is now required is a much more selective immigration policy, reducing numbers to hundreds, and a change of attitude towards the illegal migrant crisis which is better suited to the modern world. If it were me, I'd also deport criminals of foreign heritage, even if they were born here. If the country concerned would have them, I'd deny all immigration from that country going forward. Or the equivalent to 250,000 people fraudulently claiming the national average salary.

How does that help these vital industries and services.

If rules were in place that when one person comes over, they can't bring their family over then people wouldn't need to do it. If they didn't want to be apart from their families they wouldn't come. Loophole after loophole is what is being exploited. They all need to be shut down quickly. One quick immigration bill in line with Australia or New Zealand and there you go. The constant flow of third rate people entering the country can end.
