We need to stick with him and trust that he will steer us through this sticky patch of 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. I get that we are not playing well though hence the panic that normally follows a poor run of performances and results. I think we will see a slight change in formation. We can't expect to play any premier league team and go with 1 defensive midfielder and 5 forwards, shoe horning two of them into midfield positions where sometimes you have to compete physically. I do think that our style of play under PV has been impacted with the use of 5 subs. It allows teams to press us without the fear of eventually tiring. As soon as the 4/5 opposing players that are pressing our back four and keeper look knackered they are replaced for fresh legs to continue. We're not quite as good at it as other sides so that constant pressure will eventually cause a mistake. Saturday was a prime example of Mitchell needing to get rid of the ball, not giving the best pass to Luka, who should have been far stronger rather than just go down hoping for a free kick he was never going to get. Calvert-Lewin then finished off what he started. Edited by Skip (24 Oct 2022 3.16pm)

Yeah 100m sounds a lot, but on expenditure, we are 18/20th this season, and were 9/20th last season. Averaging 14th. Which is below where we are currently in the league, and where we finished last season. Move that back 2 more seasons, so from season 19/20, we're the 18th highest spenders. The further you go the more we slip down. Below teams that haven't even been the prem for all of that period. The data is clear in the fact that the squad has been comparatively negated. And we've punched above our weight for years.

We lost to a team that has had over double the investment that we have had over the last 5 years. Get some perspective

Edited by Willo (24 Oct 2022 9.49am) Agree with this completely. Even City (who have endless resources) tend to spend not much more than 100m a season. Palace have given Vieira all they can afford to give without risking the club's future.

Agree - i notice we had young phillips on the bench, would he not have been worth a try and give him basic instructions to not go too far forward and keep it simple etc. Couldn't have been worse than the team/formation he did put out. Maybe Hughes wasn't fully recovered from the virus (although well enough to be on the bench) but playing effectively only Luka in defensive midfield was bizarre. I assumed he would play Schlupp and just tell him to not go forward as much.

it makes all the difference in the world, he is a player that needs a free role, if PV doesn't want to do that sell him, and get some Gallagher clones instead, he is ruining him and Olise at the moment Its all well and good saying he needs a free role, but he doesnt produce enough to warrant it. Top teams dont have luxury players in a free role.

What does it really mean anyway? If anything Eze, if he has the temperament and work rate, should be the hub, that is, he receives the ball and has the vision to find the runners around him. Pirlo was excellent at this, and Trevor Brooking and Ray Wilkins spring to mind as tidy players with good vision and neat control who perform that type of role. Eze's not a winger or forward, he should be in the thick of the action, but I wonder if he has it in him?
