Well it seems I'm not the only one concerned about abolishing jury trials for sex crimes.

And I have my answer as to why this solution. According to the Scottish government ""The Scottish Government said: ‘The evidence that jurors are subject to preconceptions about rape is overwhelming.’""

Damn them pesky jurors of 12 honest men and women not coming up with the right decision. What next SNP? Abolish elections as the voters keep getting it wrong?

Every juror is Judge Pickles? How ridiculous - if they are supposed to have preconceptions then they can simply be briefed by the judge not to use them. It's actually probably because it's getting hard to find 12 people who speak English well enough in the UK now. I presume Islam always blames the woman too.

Muslims constitute 1.45% of the population in Scotland – there are 76,737 Muslims, 41,241 of them men, and 35,496 women.

Try reading about the original analysis. Honestly, reading the Daily Mail is like you looking inside your soul, you will only find in there attitudes that support all of your preconceptions

If the Scottish government is correct that jury's are not to be trusted then we should have a discussion about abolishing them for all offences not just sex crimes.

Not all democracies use them so there is an argument to be had there so let's have that argument. I am not comfortable that this is almost being sneaked in through the back door as a trial?

Doesn't even equate to anything I said. So enjoy the figures. It's also 12 years out. It will have changed by a few percent since. Obviously, I was exaggerating but that's presumably too nuanced - I'll just post in binary from now on. Of course, you don't believe, for example, Muslim viewpoints towards rape could effect sexual assault or rape trial?

well it all depends on the evidence. What have been the experiences in that community ?

both within the UK and in the Middle East ?

The title of the thread is suggesting failure because of the low conviction rates.
The lack of reliable evidence in the majority of cases mean they never get to court.
The cases that proceed to court, the conviction rate is very low indeed. So probably a good question to ask is why the CPS allows such cases to proceed , knowing the prosecution evidence is lacking.

Yup the case I was on shouldn't have gone to court due to lack of evidence. However a while back the CPS was castigated for not doing this so all they have done is shove the problem onto the court system.

and yet high-profile stuff gets to court. I know most of it is civil claims where the judgement is based on balance of probability, as opposed to beyond reasonable doubt.
The trump case at the moment. 30 years since the event. Ridiculous, even by American standards of litigation.
But the UK has jimmy Savile, and other cases, notably Max Clifford , where historical crimes seemingly can be 'proved'.

the manner in which Jimmy Savile perverted the Legal system and also perverted the normal rules of society ....it should be taught to history students. Lest it ever happen again.

Too right. It's almost unfathomable really, something of a masterlcass in the depraved that tragically fell through the cracks of society..

- A sprinkling of 'a different time' (aka people retrospectively caring about behaviour that they cared less about at the time)

- Aspects of 'hiding in plain sight' . He basically admitted it on occasion, but as a 'joke'. Many societal misceants hide behind jokes that actually reveal their actual beliefs and/or conduct

- Using charity and powerful people to scare anyone from questioning his motives

-Being confrontational and also zany in his appearance and behaviour as to throw people off from questioning what he's really all about

I know for one that Louis Theroux had really trouble mentally getting his head around missing what Saville was all about even as rumours swirled, but I see it as being indicative of how he was more generally perceived, as basically a bit off the world and with rumours swirling, but not a monster. In restrospect of course how wrong most were. With some exceptions, he duped a nation.

if a fiction writer produced a draft of the Jimmy Savile story, it would be too fantastical to ever get published. Not really very believable.....

i mean, a paedo with insider access to care institutions. The keys, the door codes, his own little quarters to sleep in, and arriving in a Bentley every week.

its like putting the Fox into the hen-coop.

jogging around in a psychodelic tracksuit and 'friends' with the Prince of Wales.

Friend to the Yorkshire Ripper.....BBC Disk Jockey

And regarding the news-story below, and generally.....how do paedos do teamwork ? and generally even find each other ?
