He is ridiculed not for his effort but his inability to control his nerve in front of goal and score goals, which, as a forward is primarily what he is there for.

After watching him for years I still have no idea what his best position is and how he should be played. He would be ok perhaps playing next to a prolific scorer, but we haven’t got one of them either.
