Valid point, but at that time (10 years ago) I doubt we could have attracted a top class DOF, much less actually wanted to pay what one would cost & as I think Willo pointed out the DOF position means different things to different clubs so there isnt a standard Job Description for the role -I would have thought it likely a top class DOF (with reasonable time served at any of the top clubs on his CV) would have likely wanted a larger remit & more autonomy than SP would have been comfortable with -

Not sure anyone said it was. Simply questioning if Parish is making the right decisions, or employing people that he likes/feels safe with.

Whilst Dougie might have some experience under his belt now, there is no way he would have been even taken to interview if SP was genuinely looking for a top class DoF.

I get the comment about having our fingers burnt with Benteke and Sakho but after ten seasons in the PL we shouldnt have just one recognised left back, two rights backs with a combined age of 70+, Luka should have been moved on ages ago along with sad to say it Jimmy Mac. Kayoute is a big loss in my opinion and the two no 9’s arent up to scratch. The academy may or may not produce any first teamers but this mess sits with Doug and Parish.

Some of the signings up PV have actually been quite good - Anderson and Guehi for example. However this summer is crucial and I’m not sure Doug or our scouting network is good enough. Maybe the new manager coming in might be able to pull a few rabbits out the bag…it will be very interesting and hopefully we’re still in the PL.

At the point where Roy left, we had the oldest squad in the PL & I think it was 10 players just out of contract (please feel free to correct me) I think we left ourselves with too much to do to address that balance, we did what we could, then moved on to the next window & so on, is it a tad frustrating, for sure, I believe that if we stay up this year we will strengthen a bit more during the summer & so on (obviously boardroom musical chairs, getting the right manager & FFP permitting)

I agree, the talent market for pro footballers is worldwide these days and you do have to have that in place the networking necessary to identify such players. Both Brighton and Brentford have done this with less EPL experience than us and it has paid huge dividends for them. Only circa 30% of EPL players are now eligible to play for England, hence the reason Southgate has said it is now necessary to look at players in the lower league when seeking players for the England squad. I personally think that SP/DF have not been very good at all, at either succession planning or indeed in recruiting players of the required quality, yes on paper both Eze and Olise were at the right price but they are still very much work in progress and still have a lot to prove before we can say they have made the grade. The team balance currently is all wrong and contracts have been extended on players both in the past and currently who are either not EPL standard or are they are sick or lame. The money wasted on extending CB contract was scandalous and wasted circa 12.5m in salary payments when he had no value as a striker and nobody wanted him at any other elite club.

As for the academy, that is still very much work in progress and still has a lot to prove, it is not unique, it still has to prove its productivity and is certainly not going to be the silver bullet for the future that some seem to believe. That will always be the DOF who has a productive, worldwide networking system!

For me this is where the problem lies.

If I was Parish, without superdeep pockets, and without any real knowledge of running a club, especially not at the top level. I'd want to surround my self with people who had been there and done it before.

I'd want people warning be against putting all my eggs into the Benteke basket. and then not o make the same mistake with Sakho. And that extending contracts of players that added no value to the squad was insanity.

Yeah and maybe we couldn't have attracted a op 20 in the world DoF. But as a prem club, Parish would have had a pretty good interview list.

Steve Parish has been at the helm whilst we have enjoyed 10 seasons in the PL.

Criticism as been laid at the door of our DOF but I would suggest that his 'Terms of Reference' are not widely known. His remit extends beyond the area of recruitment, and of course the club's transfer activity is constrained within financial parameters.

Strange now we are constrained within financial parameters, with apparently the lowest spend in the Premiership, with Chelsea spending hundreds of millions without any such restraints!!
Explain,please,to an old has been!!

I'm not sure whey you keep bringing this back to remit. Nobody knows hies remit, but we know it involves transfers as his name is always mentioned.

But regardless, the macro point is that Parish employed Dougie, into arguably the most important back office role, with zero experience.

From the outside, I just find that a bit insane

Our turnover/income is substantially less than that of Chelsea.

FFP permits net spending on transfers & also player wages as a factor of revenue from tickets, tv money & commercial activities. The latter is a murky area as Man City have found out - clubs getting allegedly disproportionate income from marketing & sponsorship deals from activities also controlled by their owners - common brand names like Etihad. Chelsea have basically got around FFP on transfers by having their new players on v long contracts - eg Mudryk is on an eight and a half year deal - so his cost of c£85m is spread at c£10m a year for FFP calculations. The risk of that approach is you use up your FFP allowance for the next few years so limiting future new transfer spend. Of course the more successful they are particularly in Europe the more other revenue they generate. Little old Palace have TV income but no european competition revenue, little ticket revenue, and relatively limited commercial activities. So selling talented players becomes crucial. And not burning their limited FFP allowance on rubbish players on high wages.
