I kinda felt that Wilf,s petulant attitude had been formed mostly out of frustration that his career path had stalled, when he had the opportunity for the big time (UTD) it didnt pan out as he had hoped & then again several years later when he felt he was on the verge of a second upward move chance with Arsenal their bid fell short of our aspirations both in what was on offer & what it would cost for Palace to replace him - He now has an opportunity to make his own decision ( well at the end of the season anyway) so he can see who offers what & then make a decision - it will be interesting for him to see ( & of course us) what kind of offers come in for him - I hope for our sake that if he is going he goes early in the window so we know where we stand & can make a proper plan for life without him - worst outcome for palace is that he decides on the even of the window closing that he is off - Originally posted by southnorwoodhill Interesting you should say this. I kinda felt that Wilf,s petulant attitude had been formed mostly out of frustration that his career path had stalled, when he had the opportunity for the big time (UTD) it didnt pan out as he had hoped & then again several years later when he felt he was on the verge of a second upward move chance with Arsenal their bid fell short of our aspirations both in what was on offer & what it would cost for Palace to replace him -

He now has an opportunity to make his own decision ( well at the end of the season anyway) so he can see who offers what & then make a decision - it will be interesting for him to see ( & of course us) what kind of offers come in for him -

I hope for our sake that if he is going he goes early in the window so we know where we stand & can make a proper plan for life without him - worst outcome for palace is that he decides on the even of the window closing that he is off -

As for Wilf being disappointed with his career path I would imagine that is spot on. Whether we like it or not he has been the biggest fish in our relatively small pond for some time now and I think he has always somewhat resented that. The problem is however that he has to take the responsibility for this. I honestly don’t think any huge clubs were interested in him for a couple reasons: firstly being that his style of play is very individual and therefore his ability to contribute to a team effort was near non existent and secondly his temperament which I would believe has meant a lot of top clubs and managers would not even entertain the touching of a barge pole. If he was ever going to play at the highest level he needed to address this in both adding to his game and adopting a maturer, ‘consummate professional’ attitude and he has only ever addressed the former which has somewhat coincided, and therefore I’m inclined to believe been adapted, due to the drop in his energy levels and pace. United came very early and was bad timing in being signed by Ferguson but then him leaving however once again he has only the mirror for investigation if he ends his career having not achieved that he might think he was capable of. I also believe the aforementioned cost him his real shot with England. The hope is and always had been that his departure would spark a new identity for palace and one that does not hinge almost exclusively on a single player. If he does go however recent history does not inspire me to believe this will happen. If he stays, it may well see Anelka’s ‘incredible sulk’ status threatened and that could be highly damaging. Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Wilf won't receive offers nearly as generous as he'd wish, but he'll receive offers higher than what we're willing to pay him. At that point, he'll need to decide between taking the risk of seeing less playing time elsewhere and remaining a star at Palace.

I work with kids with behavioural issues - heck, you only need to compare wilf to other top pro's - Wilf's highly emotional and is lacking a good leadership role in his life that can connect with him and steer him the right way. Wilf may not even be able to help such emotional issues, as if often the case. This was once a quality forum....

I work with kids with behavioural issues - heck, you only need to compare wilf to other top pro's - Wilf's highly emotional and is lacking a good leadership role in his life that can connect with him and steer him the right way.
Wilf may not even be able to help such emotional issues, as if often the case.

I learned that from reading Shoot! in the late-1960s and then from countless 'A word from the captain' columns in match programmes, home and away. They always tow the club line and never say anything controversial and rarely anything interesting for that matter.
