Hughes always put in a good shift. A true tackler, eye for a pass and combative. Shame he never was trusted by PV, the same goes for another midfielder/defender - Jairo Riedewald.
He was in for Van Anholt a couple of seasons ago - POTM - and back on the bench. Was a 9 min. cut from Hodgson's first training session and again, Riedewald highly impressive.
If he never gets a chance, why keep him on a good wage?

Vieira spoke of trying to find a club for Jairo in pre-season but clearly there were no offers (or at least none that were interesting to him). He appears to have excellent technical ability, but in midfield he seemed a bit soft and slow. Personally I think he's been a bit unlucky not to have at least been given more of a chance to prove himself, but then we don't see him in training every day. He is spoken of highly in terms of his professionalism and working with the youth players, so clearly not any attitude issues.

The name of this thread reminds me of the programme for CPFC v Notts County, the ill-fated opening match of the ill-fated 1973/74 season, when each Palace player was given a nickname e.g. David Swindlehurst (the problem), Derek Possee (the sherrif) and when no-one could understand why a young Paul Hammond was in the team and not John Jackson.

The rumours doing the rounds at the time was that there was a falling out between the two which was something to do with Malcom Allison and Mrs Jackson

The club tried to offload him a few months ago and Swansea were interested but Jairo didn't want to drop to the Championship. I guess that his wages would also have been a problem

Gosh I'd completely forgotten that. You've got a great memory.
Unfortunately I've failed to forget the 1-4 hammering we suffered that day!

Even at the time I remember finding this a bit embarrassing.

Paul Hammond (The Cage)
Paddy Mulligan (The Dealer)
Tony Taylor (The Road Runner)
Nick Chatterton (Interceptor)
Bobby Bell (Blockbuster)
Mel Blyth (Masterpieces)
Derek Possee (The Sherriff)
Charlie Cooke (The Card Shuffler)
Alan Whittle (The Hustler)
Dave Swindlehurst (The Problem)
Don Rogers (Troublemaker)

Meanings have changed over the years (Dealer?), Hustler was a bit dodgy too. I don't recall Bobby Bell busting many blocks and as for Mel Blyth...

I believe that there is a (ahem) 'gentlemen's lifestyle publication' of that name, but then Big Mal and the boys did later have a 'dalliance' with Fiona Richmond, I seem to recall.

I always hated Hughes when he played for Watford as he was very combative and a great ball winner. Delighted when he signed for us. Baffling he wasn't used by Vieira. I am hoping he is a "key" part of Roy's plan.

Comes across very well in interviews too...

No fear of getting stuck in like Jedinak used to, always 'in yer face' & baffled as to why he's seen so little play. When given the chance he turned out MOTM performances only to get dropped again.
