Jean Phillipe mateta as a result of the goal on saturday has moved to joint 869th best striker in Premier league history. If he scores another goal he will likely move to c. 794th best striker in premier league history

And some said he’d never make the top 800!

Bunch of bedwetters eh!?

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Calm down scarlet. One Swallow doesn't make a summer and 2 touches don't make a President.

Each and every one of us, either at Selhurst or at home whooped with delight when JPM scored, but he's not yet consistent enough to be placed on a pedestal. Moments before he scored he bungled what looked like a certain headed goal.

Unfortunately, neither JPM or OE are strikers in the same mould of, say, Ollie Watkins. At least yesterday we saw more fire and brimstone than we have so far this year and if Roy starts JPM at Leeds, and he scores, then I'll join you in campaigning.

Ollie Watkins missed a sitter before scoring as well and took along time to find consistent form in the premiership after moving up from the Championship. It’s hard to get consistent when you only start occasionally or come on with only ten minutes to go.The same goes for Edouard as well,I think we need to play one of them regularly and let him know he is the main man.

Yep agree.

I don't think Edouard terrible, but just not quite sure he is fast/aggressive enough for the prem. Suspect he'd score a hatful in the championship.

JPM doesn't look the most elegant, but does like to shoot early, and with a couple of the goals he's scored shows that there is a good player in there.

I'd agree that Mateta is more likely to score if we get balls into the box more, but for that to happen we need to go forward more.

To go forward more we need our striker to lead the line well, run in behind defences when they push up, hold the ball up and link play quickly when defences drop off, press defenders when we lose the ball, etc and so on.

Mateta is poor at all of the above. He's a big lad and can't help being slow, but he doesn't lay a glove on anyone, and when the ball does occasionally stick, the best we can hope for is that he'll succeed in the most simple of lay offs, executed slowly.

When he plays, Mateta is a big part of the reason we don't get the ball in the box as much as he needs.

Even though he almost never deploys them effectively, Edouard has better mobility, touch, awareness and skill than Mateta. I'd guess the temptation is to pick Edouard in the hope you get some of the things you need from your forward outside the box, rather than pick Mateta in the certainty that you won't.

Ian Wright would have strangled both of them long ago.

If we could get Mateta to run to the back post more he’d have more success. I’ve noticed he often moves to the front post where crosses usually evade him.

The beatings will stop when morale improves.

always thought that at the end of last season, when he was given a run of games he started to play well, and was really surprised when PV gave Edouard the majority of chances when this Season started.

Neither Strikers were helped with this seasons slow, patient build up tactics employed by PV. Continue with the faster paced attack, shoot on sight and early crossing we saw last weekend, and we'll likely see an improvement in whichever striker RH chooses. - and I'd be happy with Both on at the same time too!

incidentally, anyone notice Olise using his right boot a lot more at the weekend? A tactic to get better/more variety and crosses in to the box perhaps?

The positive spin on having 2 average strikers with neither really ahead of the other in the pecking order. Is that you can tell them regardless of who starts, they are only going to be on the pitch for 50/60 mins so give it everything and empty the tank.

Will bring another average but fresh striker to finish the game!

Alas, both Edouard and Mateta seem to have rather small fuel tanks.

Yes I noticed Olise not cutting back so much. Just maybe RH has seen that this side is younger and fitter than before so can get a tune. Shooting on sight always gets the fans going and proved so last game. More of the same as most teams we play now are of a similar ilk in respects of the season so far.
