This is a £42m gamble on the state of Wilf's body, a body that has been high impact twisting and turning for roughly 25 years (since he started as a child). And it is a gamble we don't need to take. This is exactly the moment to say thanks so much for everything, good luck.

It screams lack of confidence in our scouting. Scouting that really has started to come good of late. And it creates envy

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

I'd still offer him a contract. He's still one of he first names on the team sheet. But not 200k for 5 years. Current salary'ish for 2+1 feels reasonable.

But as you said we have shown that we can find players for cheaper, with huge sell on potential.

Olise - 8m fee + 12m salary
Eze - 20m fee + 8m salary

but we also make mistakes:

Edouard 18m fee + 20m salary

Couldn't disagree more.

A gamble? You mean like money spent on the likes of Edouard or Mateta? I'd rather wilf has an injury every now and then, than be a total sack of spuds on the pitch.

He costs nothing in buying him, he is still very skillful and puts in a shift most of the time. He draws fouls, draws players to him, knows the team inside and out, knows the ethos of Palace, has a go at players who aren't putting in the effort, he is a role model to the younger players we are getting in, he has carried this team for years before this season, you need to keep some of the older players to instill a mindset and attitude for playing for Palace. Once Ward goes... there really isn't any of the old squad left from promotion (at least who I can think of) who knows what it takes to fight to keep a squad up.

I think he puts I far more than just a goal or 2. Look at other clubs who just buy a load of players in. The new players don't usually gives 2 turds as to what the club is about nor care if they stay up.

You can buy in loads of young talent but it doesn't mean they'll be able to cut it in the Premier league as well as being far more likely to be prone to making errors and having lapses in concentration.

In any case, I think it's a good decision.

Get him signed up. It would cost 30/40 million to buy a player half the calibre of Wilf.

Dont mention the hundreds of times he should have taken the easier option and passed instead of trying to take on just that one player too many only to blast it into the upper Homelsdale.

Itís not just his value on the pitch

Players like Eze and Olise will learn from him and may be more inclined to stick around.

I wouldn't be hopeful of getting 5 years worth of good play from someone who is already suffering increasingly frequent non-contact injuries at 30 years of age.

On the other hand we shouldn't underestimate him, his genuine love of Palace, and his physical resilience? He has several months to do his rehab now... if he does stay at Palace he could be back to his best for a couple of years? Time will tell

Are we paying over the odds for one player at that age & knowing
heís had a few knocks ?

Should we invest that in two players younger, fitter & can be of resale value ??

Forever Palace Proud

You could say exactly the same about ANY incoming expensive signing. Only difference is Palace know ALL of Zaha's medical history already so any risk is way smaller than if he left and we had to sign an expensive replacement.

But my point was would he have done that if he was on £100,000 per goal as was suggested
