Opening lines from his 1st England interview . . .

'This is something I have been working towards for a long time'

England

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, speaking at St. George's Park ahead of England's Euro 2024 qualifiers: "It's big, something I have been working toward for a long time. Grateful it has happened now. I got a message they were going to be calling me up but being injured that put an end to that for a while.

"It is hard to put into words because I look at things a bit different. I saw that I was on the right trajectory. I saw that as the level I could get to. It gave me the motivation to keep going really.

"My main motivation is focusing on what I do. [My debut] That decision is for Gareth Southgate's."

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, speaking at St. George's Park ahead of England's Euro 2024 qualifiers:

On whether he will make his senior England debut against Malta on Friday: "Naturally there is always something you want next. I am grateful to be in this position. I have worked hard, no one has done me any favours as I deserve to be here."

On working with Roy Hodgson at Palace: "I am very grateful to Roy for all they did for helping me regain form. They helped me massively with my mental state too. In terms of him staying on I don't know. That isn't my decision."

On break after end of PL season: "You sort of need a balance. You want to rest because you have had a long season. I tried to get away for a short period but also trying to get back to training"

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, speaking at St. George's Park ahead of England's Euro 2024 qualifiers:

"It's been along journey, a long road. I know I have improved all round as a person and player, I don't know if I would be in this position now if it wasn't for that injury. It is part of my story."

More on Hodgson: "He advises me all the time, he has insane wisdom. The people around me, my brother, sister, family they are helpful and they help keep my mind right.

On club teammates: "[Crystal Palace and England defender Marc] Guehi has been speaking to me a bit about it. He has helped a lot in terms of making me feel settled. It is all a good experience."

On his loan spell at Wycombe earlier in his career: "That was another difficult period. Not sure whether to go on loan or what to do. It helped me more than I knew at the time. It prepared me for the men's team and gave me confidence. Without that experience I don't know where I would be."

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, speaking at St. George's Park ahead of England's Euro 2024 qualifiers:

More on working with Roy Hodgson and Ray Lewington: "From the first day I met them, I have been improving more as a person and a player. It has opened my eyes to more. I feel I have grown so much because of them. I owe them a lot. As a person how to carry yourself, how to see things. It's not about the short term but the long term. That has something that has stuck with me.

"You can see from what he did coming back how effective he [Hodgson] was. The influence he had on the players the mindset and freedom we played with. That is something we hadn't have had for a while.

"I think you could see in the performance the confidence we had. Day-to-day how he takes to each individual it is a lot. I see him as someone who has helped me so much and how to express myself."

And on if the progress of England a factor: "You want to test yourself against that, you can see the quality of the team the confidence they play with being part of that is big"

That's all from Eberechi Eze - a very impressive and well-spoken first press conference in the England set-up.

It is ver clear how much he respects Roy Hodgson and the impact the former England boss has had on him at Crystal Palace.

Eze scored 10 goals in the Premier League last season for Palace - with six of them in the final nine matches, after Hodgson returned to Selhurst Park.

with Bellingham injured and the Man City players unavailable for the Malta game Eze may have a good chance of starting.

We will have a lot of the ball so that will suit Ebs. Southgate usually plays a 433 so assuming he uses maybe Rice as a holding CM he could have 2 more attacking minded players in front of him - maybe 2 from Ebs, Maddison and CG.

Of the 3 Ebs is the form player.

Lets hope Garth Crooks reads that interview - he might learn something about what a proven manager can do to improve a player and a team

Sadly, there's none so blind as those who won't see.

I make you right, especially as, obviously with respect to Malta, he won’t be taking a massive chance starting someone new to the squad
