I checked the Cambridge Dictionary. What a surprise. You chose to ignore the first definition they offer and to use the one in their American Dictionary. The first is:-

"a large group of people with a shared culture, language, history, set of traditions, etc., or the fact of belonging to one of these groups:"

No mention of race in this, or indeed of skin-colour in either.

Perhaps you, and the others here who cling to these outdated concepts. would benefit from reading this:-

The claim was made for SE Asia as an entirety. I know that it is untrue, because I have lived there. I have been to Singapore, and know someone who now lives in Vietnam, who tells me that whilst safer than the Philippines is still uncomfortable where he is. I haven't been everywhere, and I am sure that other places are better than my own experience but the person I was answering hasn't been to any of them but was making a blanket claim about the whole region, which I know to be untrue.

SO for clarity, you posted something you knew to be untrue.

Maybe twaddle is the wrong word

So long ago I cannot remember but I expect I would have answered as honestly as I could, given the context of the questions. That doesn't mean I agree with the context of the questions.

My MP may well be long-suffering. Being a Tory MP at the moment cannot be easy. She is though doing her best to help me and has offered to meet the Minister involved on my behalf. A meeting she will try to arrange for me to attend. You cannot ask more from your representative.

The last UK census was 2021, you have no problem " remembering " things from much longer ago than that

Let's remind you of what you wrote:

'You are arguing with every Dictionary I have read on this subject. None of them states that skin colour plays any role at all in a person's ethnicity.'

It is you who made this ridiculous claim. You managed to get to 78 without apparently knowing what the word 'ethnicity' means.

It wasn't hard to find that definition....so much for your use of dictionaries.

I explained what people like you push in re-engineering words, and that's all you produced here. The suggestion that someone ethnicity can exclude their race is purely a sociopolitical concept introduced by people similar to you......those with an agenda. The word 'ethnicity' includes all aspects of someone's group background/identity.

I should clarify that when I said south east Asian, I wasn't thinking of Vietnam or the Philippines.

Most people would realize that this term is mostly used to describe Japanese/Chinese/Singapore/Korean...Hong Kong (which is mainly Han Chinese)..ethnicities that are relatively close to each other.

Obviously not all countries in this region are exact replicates, in the same way that the average native Romanian is a European but a quite different European to a native Swede.

2021 Census [From the UK Government website]
The ethnic groups were:
Asian or Asian British: Indian, pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, any other Asian background.
Black, Black British, Caribbean or African: Caribbean, African, any other Black, Black British, or Caribbean background.
Mixed or multiple ethnic groups: White and Black Caribbean, White and Black African, White and Asian, any other Mixed or multiple ethnic background.
White: English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British Irish, Gypsy or Irish Traveller, Roma, any other White background.
Other ethnic group: Arab, any other ethnic group.

A Chambers Dictionary on my bookshelves has: ethnic, ethnical, adjective, pertaining to races or peoples. ethnology, detailed study of the physical and characteristics and social customs of racial groups. ethnic, noun, a heathen, pagan.

There are also the terms BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) and BAM (Black and Minority Ethnic). Then there are of course numerous (ostensibly racist) organisations such as: Black Lives Matter, Black Police Officers Association, Society of Black Lawyers, Black Teachers Network, National Black Nurses Association, Black Architects and Interior Designers Association, Black Equity Organisation – the list could go on and on.

It was scaringly commonplace when I was there but, whilst the worse, isn't the only crime. Some of the ex-pats I know call it the "Wild-East", love the lack of law and order, and enjoy the need to protect themselves. The people are lovely, warm and friendly but start an argument over even a tiny matter and they might shoot you.

Sounds like the expats you know are imbeciles.

I have been travelling to the Philippines for forty years. In my experience the expats there were generally the dregs and placed there by companies who couldn't put them anywhere else as a last resort.

The level of corruption is endemic and much higher than most other Asian countries.

It's basically a third world country that refuses to acknowledge it.

Constant disasters man made and natural.

It's a great shame as it could easily be so much better

That was a mistype when I was very tired and in a rush. For "making" read responding to. My apologies.

Important things I can remember. Which box I ticked on a census form not so. It's not high on my list of priorities!

What you categorise as "re-engineering" is nothing of the sort at all. It's progress. It's increased knowledge and understanding. If you haven't yet read it I suggest you take the time to read this and consider its profound implications for your viewpoint:-

Relying on attitudes that were founded in the 18th century does not serve the needs of the 21st. Most of us have moved on.

The ex-pats I know are mainly retired, many ex US servicemen. Imbeciles is too strong. Different, maybe. What else you say is largely true. I won't be spending much time there again.

No one argues it's not in common use. Only that it is inaccurate, and inappropriate and, as a consequence, in the process of being reviewed and updated. Including in the dictionaries.
