West Ham's scouting team consists of an old fan who goes through our transfer rumours online.

Spot on.

We couldn't afford his air fare.

I would ignore Los Blancos re Werner. Would be a great loan player, even just for the 2nd half of this season.

Which was my point.

I am not sure he is really someone to get super excited about. He is quick but not super fast and fairly lightweight. I just remember in his Chelsea days he would get into so many good positions but manage to miss far too many presentable chances. It was much the same when he played for Germany so i don't think that a change of club is going to yield a massive increase in his goals per game stats.

1 goal in 5 games in a then top 6 team.
There are probably better options out there and our last German venture Max Meyer was also not a great success.

If there's any funds I'd rather put it towards a RB. It'd improve the play overall. Whereas taking a punt on a non- scoring CF wouldn't make much difference imo. Plus if he did do well on loan we wouldn't be able to afford him unless a low fee was set (which I'd say there's a 0% chance of RB Leipzig accepting).

I agree that he may not be a goal machine, but he was ranked as one of the top 10 fastest players in the world in 2022, so he is definitely incredibly quick. We could do with some more pace up top and he'd get more space than he did at Chelsea. Personally I'd be very excited if we signed him but I just don't see it happening.

You're right, lovechild the game is all about speed these days. Werner is super quick, but at Chelsea he kept just missing or not quite scoring. in my view a lot of his misses were just bad luck. I would rather go for a fit Werner than an unfit player who we try to repair which is our recent transfer in mode.
As you say, unlikely but we can at least hope.

He's a worker. One attribute we are sorely missing up top.

Would take him in a heartbeat

Unfortunately I totally agree. He isn't a transformational upgrade on Edouard and we could get a guaranteed upgrade at RB for the same cash. In a season where relegation looks very unlikely and cash looks short (stadium, no recent sales), bringing in a loan player who would decrease Edouard's value doesn't feel the best use of cash.

A RB that offers any attacking threat suddenly gives Olise and Eze more space and I think that would improve our attack more than Werner would. We've got 6 games coming up around Christmas that I fear could really expose our issues at RB.
