There are zero examples of this form of state succeeding in history. It's been tried several times. To limp by it essentially has to hold together using authoritarianism that has to lie and filter information to its own people. The security state expands significantly...This form of state is difficult even within an homogeneous group let along a diverse one.

You can see why it's attractive to certain types of people.
