I thought we were shocking, absolute dog food, Everton had a game plan, teamwork and focus - we couldn't get to the final third without going route 1 and scrapping for knockdowns. Can't put all the blame on Roy, it's the nature of the squad, we didn't just miss Olise we missed Ayew massively, you can get away with a few Hughes, Schlupp's or Riedewalds if your key players are in the team, without those leaders even players like Lerma can seem ineffectual - the Richards experiment in midfield doesn't work unless you have the attacking options to offset the lack of creativity in central midfield - we need better more quality back up, be they talented youngsters, loan players or whatever, and as for Eze he is all icing and no cake, he needed to help Lerma and Richards, dig in and take the game by the scuff of the neck, but he can't do that, he plays like a boy not a man, pointing to his pretty face when he scores, they should hire Neil Warnock as a personal mentor to threaten him when he disappears up his fundament, that's why Vieira stopped picking him, he needs to play with much more responsibility not just rely on others to do the dirty work. It's not Roy's fault, the back up players are limited and when we miss enough key players their limitations become cruelly exposed - that was the worst display from a Palace team I've seen since the 0-4 v scunthorpe - they were booed at the end - rightly so.

Eze plays like a boy in the respect that he thinks he is no 1 and doesn’t want any one else to get a goal. The glory must all be his. I’ve got no doubts about how good he is as an individual player and is very talented but football is a team game.

I mean that's precisely why I haven't used them in isolation nor compared him with any centre backs.

I'd imagine you'd see most players limitations when playing them out of position.

FFS are you for real?

Hughes playing out of position? He's 28 and has played in midfield for the last 12 years, over 300 games no lower than the Championship and has England U21 caps.

To ask him to play a slightly more attacking role as one of 3 CMs is hardly playing him out of position.
The fact that he clearly hasn't the legs to get up and make late runs into the box is the issue.

Incidentally according to Wiki..
Hughes has been described as a "flair player" who uses through balls and mazy runs to create space for teammates and beat opposition defences in attacking positions.[5] He has expressed a "love of a challenge, a 50–50".

So any role that is expecting him to do that is going to be problematic, right? See what I mean by saying "I'd imagine you'd see most players limitations when playing them out of position."?

Of course he's out of position as a #10 / second striker, the same way Eze would be out of position if you asked him to sit in front of the back four - Eze's limitations would very much be exposed then too.

Not sure why that is controversial.

I don't think you'd find one Palace fan who agrees that Hughes is a 'flair player'. I'm not sure Wikipedia is the best tool for that.

Hughes may well have been considered a flair player in the Ch'ship however he most certainly is not one in the PL.

He's a holding midfielder and a very limited one at that. I like Hughes, nothing against him whatsoever, but I've seen more athleticism on display in The Watch House Wetherspoons on Lewisham High Street.

I was under the impression Roy only ever employed him in a more advanced position to stifle opposition attacks, not to benefit our play, a very typical Roy move - looking to nullify the opposition as opposed to playing to our strengths.

It is for the above reason I would like to see us, possibly under a new manager, playing players in their preferred position, looking to make a game plan of our own more effective. Of course the extreme is Pardew-esque 4-4s however I'm not advocating for that.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

When Hughes started at Derby he was more of an inside forward and was seen as one of the most promising youngsters in the country with plenty of interest from the top clubs.
However, he encountered some nasty injuries which were a huge setback for his progress.
Upon joining Palace he gave an interview in which declared that he had to subsequently adapt his game such was the decline in his pace through the injuries.
Thus he became more of a sitting or holding midfield player.
He reads the game well , is a tidy passer and puts his foot in.
To my mind he’s looked at his best for Palace in a deeper role where his reading of the game and simple passes come to the fore.
The dangers are the silly free kicks he’s prone to give away around our penalty area and the fact that he doesn’t always track runners.
He was like a fish out of water when Roy played him in an advanced role.
He may make the occasional useful interception in the final third, but he’s never going to get away from defenders or make lightning breaks into the penalty area.
For me he has a role to play but I wouldn’t have him as first on the team sheet.

I wholeheartedly concur with these sentiments.
