On the subject of immigration, I think there needs to be distinction between ‘asylum seekers’ and ‘illegal immigrants’.

The 2002 the UK received 110,700 asylum applications, which was the largest number of arrivals to any industrialised nation. As a proportion of the population, it was not the highest figure, though. The UK lay eighth on that league table, receiving 1.8 applicants per 1,000 residents.

Once you apply for asylum, it is far more likely that you will be rejected than accepted. The UK is roughly in the middle of the international league table of acceptance rates for asylum seekers. All industrialised nations have cut back the numbers being granted asylum and the UK is no exception.

What does happen is that people can and do disappear into our long winded system for years on end, and this is perhaps one of the issues at the heart of the 'soft touch' perceptions. However, it is impossible to safely conclude whether this is always a wilful decision on the part of individual, or simply a failure of the system unable to cope with enormous numbers.

I do believe Illegal immigration is a security issue and what we do not know is how many illegal immigrants are working in the UK. There are no official figures for "illegal entrants" or workers because, as the Home Office points out, illegal immigrants are by their very nature clandestine.

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like.
