Of course he has his failings.

But for my money the squad and transfer issues are often blown out of proportion. It's a fairly common consensus that we have one of the strongest squads outside the top 6/7 - when fit!!. Only Jules and Ward - I think - survive from the championship squad and so that's squad has been put together in the PL.

You're right the new stadium isn't a panacea but increased capacity will move us on up financially - perhaps to the tune of a new player a season. Not to be sniffed at. Done well it could be quite a legacy.

The next level is quite attainable if you take it to be "safe time" without the threat of relegation - essentially Leicester without the trophy. Give us a couple of seasons of managerial continuity under Roy and that sort of drama free existence is within touch. From that point of view he has been downright unlucky to lose both Pulis and BFS each of whom might have made us more secure.

The trouble is of course that nothing is forever - certainly not Roy. There is considerable churn with over half the pro clubs having made it to the PL and it'd be frankly surprising if more than 7 clubs survived in the PL for the next ten years or so.

If all the best ones are fit and in today's football that isn't ever guaranteed and sometimes never happens.

When we get a satisfying win, we tend to see some "Parish is the best thing that ever happened to us" threads expounding the old "we could do so much worse, count your lucky stars, sunshine" viewpoint.

When we experience a soul destroying loss, we get a lot of "Parish doesn't know what the hell he is doing" and "the club is a shambles" voices.

The truth is, as always, somewhere in the middle. The fact is that he has done a lot for the club, including the ultimate act which, together with his pals, allowed us to remain in existence. Never to be forgotten.

But he has major shortcomings as a premier league chairman, some are very major aswell.

Also I must apologize to the OP, but there is no way on earth Parish is going to take this club to the next level. He and the club are at the level they are at, every single year, because that is the best level possible given what goes into the club and some of the bizarre decisions and errors that get made.

Getting a nice new stadium wont solve the systemic squad issues and transfer failings. If we fix that, together with our ability to actually hold on to a manager for a while, then we could go to the next level. Trouble is after many years trying, SP hasn't pulled that off yet and I wouldn't hold your breath either.

Strane thing is for all his transfer failings. Each year our squad does get better.

Not saying that good enough but when we came up we had no where near a premiership squad... and slowly but surely we're building one.

Plenty of things could have been done better... but the systematic squad issue... is it an issue anymore? I mean we just had a whole first team out injured and still fielded what could be argued a second eleven of premiership players.

Yes squad still needs to be improved with some key signings and hopefully a few contract renewals. But a keeper and striker aside... do we have a bad squad anymore?

Was never going to be an over night fix getting 25 premiership players and by no means are we there yet. But what I'm trying to say is we've come along Way faults and all and really nearly do have a decent squad.

Two keepers, (one already signed) a striker who's musted, and renewals for our midfielders plus maybe another midfielder to freshen it up.

That's four players plus some new contracts for existing players and frankly we've got a very decent squad.

So taken to long? Maybe but we're virtually there...

Also the acedemy is now seen to be working and hopefully may produce more in the following seasons which is frankly better IMO than finishing 8 rather than 13th each year.

Don't forget it's not just the stadium the club are trying to improve but also a overhaul of the Beckenham facilities to bring it up to A status. Yes planning permission was rejected for this first time round but they'll be working to resolve that.

So we nearly have a new stand in the works, better training facilities being looked at. Academy player coming through and virtually a decent premiership squad.

Not all bad !

Huh? If you mean mustard I don't see it. Benteke definitely not and Sørloth has potential imo but needs a rest, pre season and starting vs summer rusty prem players.

He played a full season, started to have a rest and was then thrown in the deep end.

Sadly, we will never be a top 6 team, if you think we can then you will be disappointed. We haven’t got the infrastructure or money to achieve that. Winning a cup or Europa cup are no guarantees, look at many who have risen only to fall like a stone Leeds, Wigan, Blackburn and Fulham to name a few.
Parish knows our level and. Top 10 side is about it. Staying in the Premiership is very difficult and not guaranteed for basically 14 teams each season.
Parish gets criticised often, but overall has guided Palace in the right direction.

I believe we can get to top 6 when not sure,

cup wins started Chelsea then the russian come in and the rest is history,

Wigan,Blackburn and Fulham are smaller Leeds catchment area is smaller but like Newcastle one team city.

Just trying to put a positive on the future of the club what could be achived with the right backing

I'd agree that we are already on the next level, this is as good as it gets. Which is why I don't understand how there are can be negative fans who refuse to enjoy the ride.

I agree broadly, but if the top six keep moving further away from the rest of us (as I think they are), then that would be depressing. There has to be more hope than avoiding relegation.

Right. But as frustrating as this can be, it is at least pretty exciting. I could do with a boring season in the top ten but where would the challenge be in that?

Like someone else has pointed out there's only a handful of clubs that are gaurenteed to ply their trade in the top flight. We will most certainly be relegated sometime in the near future and will almost certainly be back in the top flight not too far after, that's how it is for a club our size and how it will always be without selling out.

There is no "certainty" about that whatsoever, "almost" or otherwise. If relegated "in the near future" we will have a category B academy, an inadequate training ground, a squad shorn of PL talent and who knows what will happen at board-level. We MIGHT have one great big fcuk off stand and three pigs with lipstick and makeup, but as work isn't due to start until after the end of next season (and Parish is already making noises that the timescale will slip if the plans aren't agreed in April) I'd suggest no one holds their breath. We could end up with nothing to show for our record sojourn in the PL, and that's all the more likely if we're relegated.
