Yes this always reminds me of people who travel to war zones to do 'Humanitarian work' or indeed 'Study' at the local war zone university or college..........

As I understand it he traveled to the UAE to complete his degree studies by interviewing people who the UAE authorities believe to be opponents of their non democratic regime. You do have to ask hasn't he heard of a telephone? Or Skype it would have been cheaper and safer. Presumably his university were aware of his plans did no one think to mention that the authorities might not take kindly to his perceived interference? I don't believe he was a spy just another naive British person. As to his degree I believe it relates to the Arab spring. Well if he knew his subject he would know that most regimes in the Middle East suppressed the uprisings and calls for change. A bit of a clue there if you were planning on interviewing these people that the local fuzz might not appreciate it. Oh well it seems the Foreign Office has nothing better to do than bail people out of jail.

All I can say is that I'd hope that we were spying, at some level, on countries like the UAE. As long as it's not violent I couldn't give a monkey's. All countries do it.....Unless it's violent or giving away something like nuclear codes it should only be expulsion as feedback.....maybe diplomatic discussions. All major companies and states holding sensitive data have to create and maintain the highest forms of internal protection. Edited by Stirlingsays (27 Nov 2018 7.59am)
