All seem very nice although often they seem clueless as to what’s going on. There is a big difference between "supporting" a club and attending matches. 20 years ago I spent a year working for a company near Cardiff and almost every one of the Welsh workforce supported Liverpool rather than Cardiff which was the local club and outside of the Premiership at the time. I don't suppose that many (if any) actually attended matches though

I often wonder why football fans refer to themselves,or are referred to by others as "supporters" when they have never supported the club ,EVER, by way of putting money in to a club's coffers to keep them in business. No,these people are "followers" in the same way that camp followers supported an army in times gone by, but dissappeared like the night mist on asunny morning when that army suffered a change in fortune. Of course,they know everthing that there is to know about "their club" because they are well read, or perhaps not. To illustrate, many years ago while employed and installing computers in London I was told by a client that he supported the Red Devils. I enquired what made him "support" Man Ure to which he replied he could never "support" his rivals but it was Liverpool he meant. Discretion ruled, and I choose not to enlighten him.

As in all aspects of life there are definitely those who are more hardcore than others. I respect that, and it's the core that's at the heartbeat of any club. Still, any successful church needs to be broad. There's an old saying 'success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan'....it's not a particularly noble aspect to human nature...... so a new fan who takes us on when we aren't setting any pulses racing is welcome: fanatical to fairweather......Hopefully we can have a good season and encourage more. For me though it'll always be about being a South Londoner.

For me though it'll always be about being a South Londoner. Me too. I’ve lost count of how often I’ve been asked “Why Palace?” over the years. The answer “They were my local club” was invariably met with a blank stare so I changed it to “Because I’m a glory hunter”.

Who was the team you followed up until Saturday? Also, If Palace have a sh@t season or two and become everything that your former club apparently is, would you consider switching to another team?
