I have been wracking my cerebral matter but like you I cannot find any examples. Some of the players I have considered who went out on loan in recent seasons : Cadogan, N'Diaye, Sekajja, Pinney, Ladapo, Binnom-Williams, Dymond, Gray, Banton, Djilali, Croll, Appiah. Well done. I'd forgotten most of those until you mentioned them. And it's fair to say that none of them went off and proved us wrong for releasing them. Roy gets lots of flak for not blooding youngsters but perhaps the reality is that very very few do have what it takes to perform in the Premier League. Of course we will never know unless they are given a run out but recent history suggests that management have been correct in their assessment of potential.

Found this that is interesting, teams ranked by by number of minutes played by academy players, [Link] it's done on total minutes so if Wilf players every minute of the season then we would rank as high for academy players as if five players played 8 games each but it does look like not many teams have more than 4 academy players so maybe we aren't doing as badly as we think .

I know that article is old, but it really makes no sense to include minutes from players who were academy players years ago and now are established. It doesn't really show what people would be interested in - Watford's minutes included Mariappa haha who graduated from their academy, went around other clubs (including ours) and arrived back at theirs. I'd like the see the same thing but maybe with an age limit cut off (23?)

It does look like the academy is a big ego thing. We got all these youngsters preening around like top players who clearly aren’t gonna cut it. We got to be way more ruthless at all levels. We don’t seem to get the whole system. We got loads of older players free to walk this summer. Take Benteke. Costs us £6m a year. Last 2 seasons hardly played. Now trying to unload him but in three months he can walk for free. So if West Brom want him the most we can hope for is £2m. Anymore and he can ear another £2 m from us then sell himself. We just don’t seem to get it. Player churn. Ruthless. Big Sam has just moved on 6 players at West Brom. We have got to wake up to this while we still can.

Think we can just get away wuth including Wilf but Clyne would be included this year. If you wanted to look at which clubs promoted from within and give youth chance of development then it is fair to include Wilf or Ward-Prowse or even Mark Noble

If we sold Benteke for £2m and picked up Demarai Gray for 1.8m and Ferguson on a tribunal fee with both salaries covered by Bentekes, some might say that’s decent business.

I see another U23 player has gone out on loan, Scott Banks, but, in SCOTLAND, why? Imo, he was one of the better players for the U23's along with Webber, Woods & Mathews. Still, i suppose the club knows whats its doing.

So there goes Banks for the rest of the season, just when I thought he was on the cusp of the first team. I really hope he is a regular with us in the premier next season. Just what our first team needs right now. A flair midfielder who can score from outside the box.

I can't see how it will work with Ferguson injured as the fee will now be for potential if he recovers plus a sell on percentage. That fee if it goes to tribunal at present could be around £1 million and a hefty sell on fee. WBA

Kirby has been out on loan before to Blackpool looks like he did well from what I read at the time but no one has been back in for him so what does that say. If you look at the players over the last few years that have been closest to the first team they have hardly gone on to prove us wrong in our decision to get rid of them. Lumeka has actually done well since leaving. Was one of the stars of the Portuguese second tier last season which earned him his move to Troyes and he scored a brace on his debut. Kirby should be playing at a higher level by now and I feel like part of the problem is the lack of opportunities he's been given in the past 4 years.
