Perhaps they have had enough of being abused by players? Can’t see him reffing again for a while.

This sentence would certainly indicate they are.

It lifted the Cobblers up two places

Interesting that he's looking to headbutt a player called Judge!

Perhaps he wanted to make a point.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

About time Refs stuck up for themselves .
Players should have more respect for them , without them we wold not have a game or just a bloodbath .
Rugby Union has it right speak badly to the ref and a kick will go 10yards forward or you may even be sent off .
Time for football to bring in that sort of rule

Agree with you. Also following the rugby rule a yellow should also mean 10 minutes off the pitch.

Ive always said that, there so much more respect for the officials in Rugby Union. It stands out a mile when you’re watching a game.

I agree with these points about rugby union refs. I'm not a big fan, but my son-in-law has recently generated some interest in the game for me.

Watching the Six Nations games last weekend it was impressive to see the way the refs talk to the players with respect and describe clearly their decisions which allows them to effectively manage the game in a good spirit (mostly) in line with the rules (whatever they are!).

remember Ashley Cole disrespecting that ref....was it Mike Dean ?

i wanted to go onto that pitch and do a Basil Fawlty on behalf of a limp wristed ref.

i hope a few more players fall foul of a ref with a fragile ego.

My most enjoyable part of that clip was how quickly Judge shut up and backed down. Just shows how a decent level of retribution could cut this out quickly.

I do think the strongest part of rugby refereeing vs football at the top end of the game is that they are mic'd.

The respect culture massively helps, but the mic ensures that the players who breach it get absolutely blasted for it because everything gets heard. I think it'd also help with understanding the decisions and generally make the refs come across as being more human.

I've never understood why that 10 yards/yellow card retribution seemed to evaporate. It could be sorted out this weekend in one go if that actually got enforced.

So are football refs in the EPL & most(not all) in the EFLCH. As for the rest of your post i totally agree.

It's a pity we don't take the same approach as Rugby, where if you disrespect a ref you pay a price for it. For too long in football abusing refs has become the norm. If anything I'm surprised more of them don't react.

I've long thought that the respect for referees in both rugby union and rugby league is partly based on a recognition by the players that they are involved in such a violent activity that without that respect, for both the officials and their opponents, things could go horribly wrong. On the subject of respect, I was a little surprised to see that even at international level the teams still observe the old tradition of lining up to applaud their opponents off the pitch.

But if all else fails, as it has in football, then yes, bring in sin-binning and the 10-yard rule. I suspect, though, that referees who enforced such rules would not get the support of the authorities and would find themselves demoted for "spoiling the game".
