There is sense in this. I've said it before but although the board are well within their rights to sack Roy if he continues to lose games 2-0, 3-0, the way we are currently playing is BECAUSE of the players we have. More importantly the age of said players, especially the defence.

We cannot play a higher line because we have geriatric defenders who can't run fast. This means the whole team suffers as everyone has to sit back more, track back more to cover the weakness.

Unless we get a couple of younger, faster defenders in it won't matter what manager we have, or how many youthful attacking players we buy. Although it could mean we draw more games 2-2, 3-3. At least it would be entertaining.

Anyone who thinks a team playing a pensioner/Dann at the back with a midfielder can afford to play free flowing positive football doesn't understand how football works.

If anything it's the boards fault for not investing in the defence more – buy all the strikers you like. Won't make any difference.

Exactly. Roy works with what he has at his disposal. Currently that is a centre back pairing with a combined top speed of about 1mph. Whilst that remains the case, we are not going to play a high tempo attacking game as Premier League opposition will have a jolly up against us & we will be relegated.

This isn't even an attack on Parish as I believe maintaining our Premier League status for now will be significant in the clubs long term future.

I don't want to come out and attack the fans (although I have no issue with taking digs at the HF) but the turning on Roy is disappointing beyond belief and puts any myths about our "special" fanbase to bed. Roy is a good manager & has done well for us whilst feeding off scraps. And the attacks on him is childish & ridiculous.

He's not exempt from criticism though. He may not have the players he had at the beginning of his tenure but we should not be losing games to Burnley 3-0. The question is more what is realistically achievable with these players, I'd argue getting slapped by three goals at home to them is below what they're capable of. On the other hand, winning games like that with free flowing football like some seem to suggest is possible? Not realistic.

That is your opinion.

Attacking Roy on every possible level is arguably wrong to the same extent as it is to try an absolve him of any responsibility or criticism.

I've stated before that I would consider what Roy has achieved in keeping us in the Premier League as worthy of respect if not high praise. Does not mean people can't have differing opinions on the scales or merits of any achievements, that's the nature and beauty of football. It also doesn't mean that a manager is permanently shielded from criticism in the here and now.

As it stands, we are not factually safe from relegation, have seen some awful performances this season (some may say many), have lost the last two without even a whimper, looking terrible in the process and have an abysmal record without Zaha under Hodgson, which is the situation we now find ourselves in.

I would never consider the measure of a fanbase to be its blind devotion to individuals in high paid jobs but rather its commitment to the club itself including what actually goes on on the pitch, which surely is the primary purpose of a club in the first place.

We've always scored highly in polls of 'best fans', as a season ticket holder I am accustomed to hearing the chant 'where's your famous atmosphere' on less entertaining days/nights and I believe even FIFA (the video game) have included commentary lines to note the passion of our fans. It's a bit too self indulgent for me to harp on about it but its worthy of recognition.

I can't understand why a Palace fan would be so quick to defend our manager from any criticism yet insist on criticising the clubs fans within the same breath.

Isn’t this the reason why we have to go back to three central defensive midfielders in front of the back four with two wide midfielders either side of those three? Have Ayew working his socks off as a lone striker and hope we get a break to hit the opponents against the run of play. Hodgson was doing this until trying to fit in Eze and it’s gone Pete Tong badly? Let’s scrape together the points to keep us up.

He's definitely not exempt from criticism. I am just certain that anyone expecting a better net show from the current crop of players we have at the club over the course of a full season is naive beyond belief.

mmm – fair, but I think all the injuries are hampering his plans a bit as well...

Quite a few key players that fit into that system are not available. He can't revert to 4/3 as he doesn't have the players for it currently. I also think if Schlupp was fit he'd be ahead of Eze as he is basically the key to that system alongside Zaha. Townsend is waning rapidly and PVA can't play the Schlupp role so his hands are tied a bit.

Again though, should we be losing 3-0 to Burnley at home? No. Am I giving a balanced opinion rather than an overly emotive or partisan one? Yes.

I am very much on your 'Wavelength' on this issue in terms of the expectancy levels with the current group of players.
I have pontificated on numerous occasions about the 'Dad's Army' squad, many in the twilights of their long careers.

Forget opinions. This isn't based on opinions.

Roy Hodgson is one of the most successful managers in the clubs history. Fact.

For the majority of his time at the club we have received more in transfer funds than we've dished out. Fact.

He is the only manager we have had since we've been in the Premier League who hasn't had us involved in a relegation scrap. Fact.

We are closer to the top half (right now, as large chunks of fans descend into meltdown) than we are to the relegation spots. Fact.

Nobody is suggesting Roy Hodgson is beyond criticism, not least me. He can be frustrating as anything and the last couple of performances were very poor. But to suggest there is a manger out there who would take the current squad further than Roy is bordering on deluded.

It's like we've got so used to literally not signing anyone that we signed Eze in the summer and everyone started acting like we rebuilt the squad and should be pushing for Europe. We are nowhere near that standard yet. And if we want to reach it, maintaining our status in the Premier League for now is paramount.

If we are to push on, Roy's role in (comfortably) keeping us afloat will be vital. Even if a bunch of spoilt brats in the HF and their disciples aren't grateful for it.

You're easily pleased them if that's the best you expect from this group of players, our performances for most of this season have been absolutely pathetic and wasn't even worth them turning up. Southampton first game of the season so was a coin toss, we played utd at the right time, Leeds were unlucky with a close var decision and then a freak own goal, west brom looked the better team till the sending off, a poor wolves without jimemez, scoring on our first shot on target after 60 mins. Tbh can't even remember our Fulham wins as our performances have been so underwhelming and forgettable this season.

It's like you don't even read a word I say & are just blinkered by an obsession with getting Roy out at this point that's it's not even worth having a debate about it. It's like the kids on Twitter.

What I want is not the point. The points is that if you are expecting more from a squad of players whereby the first choice centre half is 35, in the top flight of English football, then you are deluded mate. It's not about what you or I want for the club. But if you're disappointed that we're not Champions League yet, you ought to look at our transfer business since Roy took over & perhaps direct your grievances elsewhere.

What is it you are expecting over the course of a season that another manager would achieve that Roy hasn't?

So you're literally excusing everything else down to the fact we have one centre back in our squad who is 35, what a load of rubbish. Let's look at Brighton away on Monday, every other team in this league would identify that fixture as one they could pick up 3 away points from albeit win lose or draw. We will look at it as a fixture we can get a decent away point from and will set up to do exactly that from the first minute and hope for the best. If we go a goal down then game over as Hodgson has no plan b and his subs are usually too late and completely baffling.
