I don’t think I agree with our transfer plans being totally reactive.

Remember all the pundits and reporters talking about how much trouble we were in when we had 13 players out of contract. It was basically a case of everyone saying without those players, we are done for. Roll on the summer. We kept the ones we wanted, and replaced the ones we didn’t, with younger more promising players. That whole summer transfer window had been planned for…and we have done well out of it.

So why do we keep running the club down like they can’t plan signings? It’s ludicrous to suggest the club don’t have a list of players they watch. Almost every club in the world has a list of players they want…lower down the leagues, if it’s not the club it’s the manager.

Those players are likely on a lot of others clubs lists as well…so it’s never as simple as it seems.

Well exactly, it would be ludicrous to suggest that they were wholly reactive.

Take the Hall situation, we may well have had a few targets (but he was no1) but we had to wait for pre-season for Chelski to decide if they were going to let him go.

Broadly speaking there hasn't been much movement by a lot of prem clubs this window yet. You normally need to wait for the top clubs to get there squads sorted and/or a bit of money to start sloshing around and filtering down

I tend to disagree with a few of you here.

We’ve wanted a right back for two seasons (some would argue 3), no right back.

We’ve needed a striker since we found out both Mateta and Edouard are distinctly average, no striker.

Our plan to provide cover and maybe an improvement at left back is to yet again wet nurse a player for Chelsea with no provision to buy after a loan.

We’ve lost our two star players out wide from last season albeit we are not sure of Olise’s injury duration and whether he is going to be our player once he is fit. No replacements (França is not a winger and is injured).

If we are not careful we will start the season with just one decent keeper.

Yes, some of these holes may be filled but I very much doubt they all will be and our transfer policy never allows us to have any sort of pre season with new players (Lerma excepted).

If the above situation is what you guys consider a decent transfer strategy then I’m not with you on it.

I think overall I agree with you. We never seem to have a balanced squad anymore. I look at the first 4 games and think we should be targeting 7-9 points, but when you look at the team that is likely to start the first few games I can't see us getting that many.

You can be certain that some of those gaps in the squad will be with us all season.

Its frustrating in that we have 2/3 of a very good first team, let down by some positions and squad depth. However, I guess finances dictate that.

The most realistic assessment of the situation I have seen on this forum.
We seem to have reverted to patching up the squad and making do and mending.
It may be enough to keep us up but there is a lesson to be learnt with Leicester.
Who would have had them going down this time last year?
Like us they had a handful of excellent players, but they also had a few veterans, a few injury prone players, a few who wanted out and players that were brought in who weren’t good enough.
We still have time to address shortcomings in the squad , but where are the goals coming from to turn draws into wins and losses into draws.

Trouble is it’s the best we can do with our finances, we’re probably not signing a striker because SP thinks we’ve got three already, we’ve also got two (Fit) right backs, three if you include Ferguson. So no new right back needed. It’s only as fans we want better, but we don’t have to balance the books and sit looking at the huge wage packets of players not featuring

Exactly. It’s not great but it’s where we are. I think we’re better than half a dozen teams in the league and nowhere near good enough for seven or eight of them. Same as most of the last ten seasons.

The problem that we have is that about 3 injuries to key players/positions and the back-ups we have are inadequate.

If Johnstone, Eze and say Mitchell were injured and for 10-12 games how comfortable would people think about survival then?

The SP quote about the Sun not coming up springs to mind and then Benteke gets injured leaving us with no centre forwards. Sometimes the Sun doesn't come up (most of this summer!!).

I do think after the time we have been in the Premier League we should be able to have 2 left backs and 3 strikers (Ayew is not a striker) in our squad for the start of the season.

Hard to disagree, but its working withing the constraints we have. So we are filling the mandatory positions. We aren't going to replace OE of JPM with anyone better, so better to save the cash.

Where we can patch up (e.g. 2 old RBs) we will. Kicks the can down the road another year.

It looks like the Hall deal is a done deal. Plus, Schlupp has always been quite capable of filling in at left back for short periods.

I really think fans should be concentrating on who is being brought in to replace Zaha. There has to be someone coming in…that’s quite exciting. Because it should be someone good!

You are correct however I think the same applies to most teams outside of the top six, take away their 3 best players and they would struggle as well.

Sheff United have a ton of injuries lets hope we can capitalise on that.

I'm inclined to think there is some money to spend because if not then it seems an even bigger risk to invest in Franca who it seems may take some time to have an impact. If we sign Hall we finally have cover for Mitchell and also another option in midfield. That versatility could see Roy using him in front of Mitchell with money being spent on a striker rather than a winger. Hall can deliver a great cross and is a great passer, so it may be we go down a different route to signing a tricky winger. Also, all the videos of Franca do seem to show him coming in off the left, so it may be that is where Roy will use him, a bit like he did with Eze when he first arrived.

Our squad is very thin but I would rather see youngsters promoted than padding the squad with journeymen or pointless loans. If youngsters see a path to the first team it will pay dividends. For example, I have no concerns about starting the season with Whitworth as number 2, or O'Brien as our fourth choice centre-back.

Edit: by pointless loans I mean loans for positions we're already covered in
