Team news

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson welcomes back on-loan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the squad after he sat out last week's win over his club Chelsea.

Hodgson must decided whether to recall Loftus-Cheek to the first XI or stick with the winning team that saw off the Premier League champions in style.

Wayne Hennessey is available after recovering from the calf problem that kept him out against the Blues, so Hodgson must also decide whether to stick with Julian Speroni. Strikers Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham (both knee) are still missing.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle is sidelined with a calf problem and won't play against his former club. Defenders Massadio Haidara (knee) and Paul Dummett (hamstring) are both out.

Newcastle: Elliot, Darlow, Woodman, Yedlin, Manquillo, Mbemba, Gamez, Haidara, Lascelles, Clark, Lejeune, Hayden, Merino, Shelvey, Saivet, Ritchie, Atsu, Murphy, Aarons, Diame, Perez, Joselu, Mitrovic.

Palace squad: Speroni, Hennessey, Ward, Fosu-Mensah, Kelly, Dann, Sakho, Riedwald, Delaney, Schlupp, Van Aanholt, Souare, McArthur, Milivojevic, Cabaye, Mutch, Lee, Kaikai, Ladapo, Puncheon, Sako, Zaha, Townsend.

Quotes

Roy Hodgson

"Newcastle are a good footballing team. I watched them at Southampton and they were every bit as good as I expected. They are a well organised team with a clear idea of what they want to do with and without the ball.

"Playing at Newcastle is like coming to Selhurst Park; it’s a fanatical atmosphere, the support is as good as we benefit from. It’s always a chore or a challenge going up there however well they are playing.

"At the moment they’ve had a very good start, a deserved start because they play good football, and we have to give exactly the same performance that we did against Chelsea.

"Football is about victories and defeats. It's a constant succession of parties and funerals. That’s never going to change.

"You have to be careful as a coach or manager to even those things out a little bit and not allow people to think every defeat is some sort of funeral atmosphere or every win is euphoria. We've got to get somewhere in between those two things."

Andros Townsend

"I'm not sure I'll get a good reception [going back to Newcastle] but I had a fantastic time there. Unfortunately it didn't end well but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there with the fans and I'm looking forward to going there and see a few familiar faces. I'll enjoy it.

"Ultimately we are going there for business, to win a football match and that's all I'm focused on. It's similar in the way (Hodgson and Allardyce) work. They like to do a lot on the training field; very hands on, the pair of them. They like to go through every scenario that will occur on the pitch so that when it occurs you are ready for it.

"Like Sam, it wasn't a quick fix: we didn't initially pick up results but eventually you saw how well we were playing towards the end of last season and I've no doubt in my mind that we'll get to that again under Roy."
