Symons started his career as a trainee with Portsmouth where he spent seven years making 220 appearances, scoring once. He moved to Man City in 1995 for £1.2m, and was three years at Maine Road, playing 140 times before moving to Fulham on a free in 1998.
After 128 appearances for Fulham, winning two championships in three years, he moved to Selhurst for £400,000. Symons was an influential member of Fulham's surge up the leagues between 1998 and 2001.
The experienced centre-back was looking for regular first team football after losing his place in the Fulham side and arrived at Palace in December 2001 for £400,000 under Trevor Francis.
Suffered a groin injury after just two months of his Palace career and was ruled out for the season. He returned to the side in November and was a virtual ever-present in 2002-03.
When boss Steve Kember was sacked in November 2003, chairman Simon Jordan asked him to take charge as caretaker manager. He steadied the ship and the struggling team showed improved form but he was disappointed not to have been given the role full-time.
Iain Dowie was given the job and Symons became his assistant. Symons struggled with injuries and was unable to play any part in the second half of Palace's promotion winning season of 2003-04. He has 36 caps and two goals for Wales.
