Worth £750,000 in the deal which brought Clinton Morrison to join Birmingham City for £3.5m. Highly-rated by Trevor Francis, who he took under his wing while in charge at Birmingham.

Johnson worked his way up through the ranks at Brum and clocked up nearly 100 appearances over three seasons while still only 21 years old.

The Bedford-born man has lightning pace but Birmingham fans felt he didn't score enough goals and was played on the right wing.

After a difficult start, Johnson was the club's top goalscorer with 14 goals in his first season (2002-03) with the Eagles.

But 2003-04 was a season to remember for the pacy striker. He worked hard on his finishing and netted an amazing 32 goals, helping Palace gain promotion through the play-offs and won a host of awards on the way.

AJ was crowned Palace's Player of the Year, he won player of the month awards for January and April, was named in the PFA team of the season and then scooped the Umbro Isotonic Goalscorer of the Season - the official award of The Football League.

In 2005, Johnson scooped the Palace Player of the Year award for the second season running. He capped a remarkable campaign in which he scored 21 goals in the Premiership - second behind Arsenal's Thierry Henry - and won his first England cap.

The striker was shortlisted for the PFA Footballer of the Year award and named in the PFA team of the season.

He also finished eighth in this season's Barclays Premiership Actim Player Ratings and was the third best striker behind Thierry Henry and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Update: Sold to Everton for £8.6 million
