Contract expires: June 2005.

Northern Ireland international Hughes began his career as a trainee with Man City, where he played 33 times before moving to Strasbourg for £450,000 in 1992.

He had two loan spells at West Ham two years into his contract and he made the move permanent in 1996. A year later, he moved across London to Wimbledon for £1.6m, making over 100 appearances.

Hughes went on loan at Birmingham City in March 2002 but when he got injured, both Wimbledon and Birmingham disputed his contract registration.

Birmingham were accused of reneging on signing him from Wimbledon which meant he was without a club for the whole of 2002-03 while not getting paid by either club.

The veteran was signed by Steve Kember on a one-year deal for a free after impressing during a trial. He eventually got compensated by Birmingham and was thinking about taking legal action against Wimbledon.

He was outstanding in Palace's promotion-winning side with a number of hardworking, combatitive displays in centre midfield and just missed out on the player of the year award.

Hughes surprised most observers by continuing his good form into the Premiership and his outstanding displays earned him the Vice Presidents' Player of the Year award.
