Really shocked. I thought the popular vote would be close, but the electoral college shouldn't have been. Fair play to him. He has turned politics on its head, by tapping into an anti-establishment undercurrent as well as a racist, bigoted, misogynist undercurrent separately. If that's what the people want, then that's what they get. I suspect he will be much more pragmatic as actual President. He is relatively socially liberal, just fiscally conservative. But it is going to be fun seeing him try and apply his most outrageous policy suggestions - banning Muslims from entering the country (which he admittedly backtracked on), getting Mexico to build a multi-billion dollar wall, deporting 11.5m "illegals". As well as the shock horror around the world he no doubt had a word in his ear that those crazy policies would never go through congress and even if they would, they're unconstitutional anyway so tone it down Hill Billy Boy.

How anti-establishment is a rich white business man, from a rich family? The anti-establishment candidate lost out on the Democratic Nomination. I didn't actually say he was anti-establishment, just that he tapped into that. But I think it is fair to say he is anti-establishment. Because the establishment, for the most part, hated him. The Republican establishment hated him. Paul Ryan must have been gritting his teeth congratulating a man he has publicly criticised time and time again. The Democrat establishment loved him when they thought he was going to bring HRC into the White House. But they hate everything he has stood on a platform for. He may be from an establishment background, but he was clearly an anti-establishment candidate. Funnily enough, Obama is from a very anti-establishment background, but he was a pretty establishment candidate just with a different colour skin.

Completely agree. He had a bit of fun through the campaign. Now it's a reality it's time for a bit of common sense

I didn't like his empty threats during the Brexit campaign that he stuck his nose into and the fact that he has achieved the square root of fcuk all in 8 years. Farage had one goal and against all the odds achieved it. The man is a genius. As for his visits to the pub, these have been severely curtailed by the arseholes from Momentum and Class War who think it's acceptable to harass politicians in their local trying to have a sunday lunch with their families... and yet you call him a troublemaker. As for Trump - he will be judged at the end of his term of office.... but he hasn't got a hard act to follow in Obama. No. I haven't got out of bed the wrong side nor am I your 'love' I am stating an opinion which I have managed quite successfully without the need for rudeness. A concept you clearly struggle with

Still, it’s a laugh. A ha ha ha ha. Laugh through the tears – it’s the only way. Maybe it’s all just a massive wind-up. Perhaps the President Defect will be sworn-in by the reanimated corpse of Jeremy Beadle. f***ing idiots. If you’re pissed-off with endemic hierarchical corruption, you set fire to and cut the heads off s***; you don’t choose to be led by someone able to be outwitted by a donkey. Leader of the Free World. How embarrassing. Imagine being envious of the North Koreans for their leader’s credibility. Ye gods. Still, progress of a sort – no female Potus but we do have the first retard. George W., now Klump - how the hell do Republicans top that? Get your money on their next winner in 2028 being a bag of rotting fish guts. The Garbage-Man can... Jeremy Beadle is dead?!

Watching Newsnight for the past decade and all those deserted industrial towns and people moving into caravans it is no wonder this has happened. People take so much and then have enough. These problems began before Lehman brothers. And Trump being a businessman wins their confidence he knows the day to day life and not just strategy as a civil servant. He might have out sourced to 3rd world and cheaper countries but not doing so was uncompetitive. So he understands the why's and the why we shouldn't. A lot of people on the outside have no idea why and how people have lost out with globalisation. Well they're learning from not paying attention.

I don't think Obama is in any way cool, nor do I dislike him. You're obviously an Obama fanboy hence you've got defensive when I've questioned him. I think it still stands though - if Obama had united a country, or at least seen the green shoots of something like that happening, there wouldn't be such an appetite for change from the American people. It's not the only factor at play I know. Re: "appetite for change" Republican candidate at 2012 election got 49% of the vote. Trump in the last 24 hrs also got 49% of the vote. So no major shift. Choosing Hillary is what done for the Democrats.

There are so many more factors at play and as I say the Clinton era probably has a lot to do with it. I wouldn't bet against Michelle Obama being a democrat candidate one day Very true but without the racists - David Duke ex-KKK a supporter for one - and other nutjobs he wouldn't have got in. He played to particular audiences. It worked. His VP is a crazy sh1te too. Edited by Kermit8 (09 Nov 2016 11.34am)
