Probably rather an obvious suggestion but if Lord Willetts and his fellow fake lords and ladies drawing substantial benfits for signing in at that totally irrelevant place - the House of Lords - were to contribute their income to young people it could help a little. And how about redirecting the funding of his silly Resolution Foundation (based in a fancy London address, I observe) to the young people he so cares about?

Nothing is fool-proof - fools are too ingenious

Largest users and most expensive participants in national health scheme - who are currently given dispensation from charges - asked to contribute to its cost according to means testing. It’s just so unfair.

It’s ok to admit you were wrong.

Wrong how? I never said they did or didn’t earn more. I asked for proof. I said £20 isn’t much vs the average wage and the living wage is around the corner which will reduce this £20 per week.

But that is not what is proposed. It is a tax on working pensioners not all pensioners. I don't work and would be exempt yet I might be better off than those taxed.

For the record I actually agree with you it seems odd that the people who use the system most by and large don't contribute. All pensioners should contribute something unless they are really poor. As for free prescriptions the system is a joke and has been abused for years.

Of course, if all those selfish Generation X and Millennials actually took care of their elderly relations themselves instead of expecting the State to to so, as previous generations have, there wouldn't be all those pesky old people bed-blocking and needing care home places.

I think that's a very fair statement there.

The average Millennial complains about house prices... When I ask them how much property deposit have they built up so far, they answer "zero"! (They also insist on living in zones 1-2). Baby boomers and Generation X actually saved money, didn't go away on fancy holidays and didn't eat at expensive restaurants which they post on Instagram. It's easy to blame the market and the government, but what are YOU doing about your financial future? I'm planning for retirement now. The elderly have by and large been responsible with their finances and should not be punished. The government STEAL enough money as it is...

Quite, which is where I was coming from in one of my original posts when referring to rediscovering and nurturing 'family values' within society etc. I work in Social Services and we see those elderly with carers/family members need far less care and support then those without or family that do not live nearby. It seems an obvious thing; but its one of those 'hidden' contributors to the drain on public funding.

Doesn't a truth have to be true?

A quick search of 'Millenial saving habits' or something similar will throw up tens of reports and studies which would suggest the above is anything but a truth.

I'll go with personal experience over 'studies'. I don't trust them.

Is it not a bit of a contradiction to argue that people should be more willing to move out of London, but also should be more responsible for their parents care?

Both my parents live in London - if I was to move from the city, this obviously affects my ability to provide care as they get older.

I get your point on family values etc, and I agree, but it just seems a bit of a contradiction given you were advocating relocating earlier in the thread.
