Indeed someone who joked about the alleged recipient not paying tax on the proceeds perhaps has a valid point; even 17 year olds are subject to tax law. Mrs YT speculated that it could have been a case of blackmail that's backfired so run to the papers. I'm even a bit surprised at the flak the BBC is taking. If someone went to the papers and made such an allegation about an employee of (say) ASDA, would there be an expectation for ASDA to investigate it and pressure for them to name the employee? Fair enough that sordid goings-on are likely to affect your career prospects, but the activity that's taken place is nothing to do with the employer where it's done in the employee's own time.

I was with you up to this point. Assuming he has not broken the law but the paying for explicit pictures if true then he has to be sacked. What I don't quite 'get' is the clamour for the BBC to be the investigator and then to investigate it in the public gaze. (I'm still not sure I've explained it too well though!)

Everyone knows the BBC is absolutely top-drawer in terms of investigating it's own employees. Why anyone would doubt the ability of this politically-charged waste of licence-fee money to investigate itself is beyond my comprehension.

As for the clamour I'm afraid that is standard media practice the other outlets are trying to get the BBC to out this person rather than naming him themself. The BBC can't cry foul over this because they have done the same in the past and no doubt will do so in the future. I'm afraid it's all part of the dog eat dog mentality of that industry, relishing another company's discomfort and then going all holier than thou when it's them. The BBC has had great fun over the phone hacking scandal putting the boot into the tabloids who are now getting their own back.
