Spurs wanting to sign one of our young prospects; that'll end well

Scored five goals (four in the first half) in the U18s' 7-0 win at Barnsley today.

Here's the original story on Spurs being interested in him: [Link]

"Palace will hope that the striker rejects any overtures from north London, and follows in the footsteps of midfielder Kian Flanagan, who was the subject of interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, also rejecting an offer from Manchester United last season, to agree a professional contract with the Eagles."

But the problem for me is: "Kian who?" I guess we would have been this way with Wilf or Nathaniel at one time, but the idea that players are gonna make it through to the first team are slim. If a player believes he is going to have more chance with another club then he may feel he has to move. Which I think is very different to the example of Bostock (as alluded to by Bexley) as he was going to make it into our first team, or already had.

We don't exactly have a good recent record with bringing on youngsters from the academy and in an article I read last week detailing the number of players in each squad that had come through their academy we came near the bottom.

It doesn't help when one of our brighter ex academy players is good enough to get to the semi finals of the Euros but can't get a sniff in our team and Pardew hinted last week that he probably never will.

I do not get what you are implying?? Kian Flanagan is only 16, so even though he is highly rated, so higly rated that Man United were trying to sign him, he wont feature in our first team just yet. The same with Baptiste. He must be good if Spurs want him. If they are special, which it seems they are, they will eventually make our first team. We are a Premier League club, so it might be a couple of years before they are introduced to us, as first team players even in the League Cup

Hi Glaize, I wasn't saying Kian who? as in who cares, but highlighting that if one player looks at other who have signed he may not see a clear future. He may more likely see players at other clubs coming through and no one at Palace. Baptiste isn't aspiring to be Kian. He isn't even aspiring to be Johnny Williams. He aspiring to be Wilf and actually play in the PL. but we aren't brining players through presenly so I don't believe he will automatically see Palace as the place to remain.

To be clear I don't want other clubs stealing our best players.

I have a horrible vision of Levy prowling around our academy's matches as the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Surely if you watched him in the Euros you'd agree he should be no where near our first team.

I'm all for playing academy players and having home grown talent come through. But they have to be good. Williams isn't good enough.

Does sound fantastic that we've got what sounds like a couple of gems in the pipeline. We're a Prem club now and as such we won't be forced to sell our best academy players, and should be able to offer the best ones a quick route to first team football than say the likes of United or Chelsea.

The futures bright!!
