Thank you for your insightful contribution to this debate Indeed. I think Wilf has always had half an eye on 'bigger things' than Palace which would fit with just about every other footballer currently employed within the game. The likes of Jack Grealish, who I think is an interesting comparison, got their big move early, from his boyhood club who are now in Europe, and had it work out for them whereas for Wilf it did not. I always wonder if Sir Alex would have been a different story for him altogether. Wilf is such a unique player that I think it was always going to be hard for him to integrate seamlessly into another team let alone a 'big' one. The difference at Palace is the team seems almost moulded to accommodate him whereas bigger clubs were highly unlikely to do this. A comparable player is Saint-Maximin for Newcastle who seems to have dropped down their pecking order upon the arrival of major funds and a manager looking to mould a team beyond one tricky winger. It's been a marriage made in heaven for us. We've survived in the PL despite being unable to procure several top level attacking players over the years as we could rely upon Wilf to provide a huge proportion of our attacking threat, which he can do single-handedly. Unfortunately only a team like ours, with limited funds available, would be willing to accommodate a player like Wilf for this purpose. Bigger teams, his desired destination, do not and thus have not looked to. He can help keep a team in the PL but cannot, as no player could, fire a team single-handedly to silverware let alone major success. The 200k p/w at 30, and with us seemingly above the 'just fight for survival' cohort of PL teams now is truly a litmus test the club, fans and Wilf. I'd like to suggest that saying he may not now be worth such a contract can be an opinion existent alongside the acknowledgement of just how monumental he has been for us as a player and his unparalleled contribution to our team over the past 15 years. I would suggest Wilf's desire to move on from Palace is a brutal reality fans have to expect and accept as much as Wilf will have to with the opinion that he may now not be worth that sort of contract and it would not reflect good business for the club.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Yes he has been a major player and to use that much over used phrase a legend but there are many reasons the time has come to say thank you but goodbye. It is madness for a club of our size and finances to pay anyone 200k per week Similarly a player whose star is definitely on the wane be offered a 4 year deal. it is unlikely he will be a first choice starter for more than the first year and then an impact sub? Extending Wilf's contract will have a number of effects Firstly it will restrict the money we can pay new recruits and hence calibre Secondly it restricts the development of our own academy players who may or may not be good enough but they need the oportunity Thirdly Any proposed Wilf replacement will not sign for us The current Wilf hasn't decided is really detrimental to our future. In my view we should withdraw our offer and start to plan for the life without him. Find a player that suits us in terms of age, talent , financial feasability and most important fit to the ethos of Crystal Palace. This may sound harsh but football is harsh. I realise that replacing Wilf is not simple but we are no longer a 1 man team. We need to plan for the future and can not stay rooted in the past. By not moving forward now all we are doing is putting off an inevitable descision for another time when suitable replacements may not be available I tend to agree. And if we could sign say Jack Harrison, I'd take him on modest wages vs a 30yrd Wilf on mega bucks all day. AS always it feels like this window is pivotal. We're got a really exciting nucleus of a team, and a couple of good signings could really help us kick on. As much as I love Wilf, c. 4years on c.200k will end up being a millstone.

It will be best for Palace and Wilf if he moves on. Unfortunately for Wilf and the club he moves to it won't be easy, as he has a difficult personality

Wisdom dictates that the much debated offer of this quite ridiculous salary should be withdrawn immediately.

Spreading the rumour he's been offered 200k per week is good for both sides as Palace can say they did everything they could to get him to stay if he does leave, while Wilf's agent can tell interested clubs that's what they need to at least match. Another figure of 150k was also doing the rounds at one point which seems more likely, albeit too high really. Unless either side comes out to confirm the figure offered then I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

It ends 30th June. I get your point but as a grown man of 30 years he should just front up and do an Mbappe and say what his intentions are...he should have done it ages ago. If he wants to go then fvcking go, if he wants to stay, then stay but don't take the piss with wages as that will set a precedent we can't afford. Its all bollox really Edited by HesHereHesThere (16 Jun 2023 3.40pm)

Time to move on. He has been great for us, but all good things come to an end. Let him play in the French or Saudi leagues for massive money as he edges to retirement. Half a dozen decent games a year for us is too high a price to pay. Get some kids in who want it more. Jack Clarke is not a bad shout.
