I am well aware of the Geo political map and trust me Syria is a testing ground for the Russian war machine.

Which wouldn't actually be there in any material way if ISIS and the anti-regime forces were being funded and supported (both indirectly and overtly) by the US & other NATO states, Saudi, Qatar and even Turkey.

Full-on proxy war is what we have in Syria, with a desired endgame of either a Saudi or NATO puppet regime in place. It's no coincidence that the new US administration apparently opining that Assad doesn't have to go is immediately followed by an atrocity that changes their mind.

I seem to recall the syrians having to declare what stocks of chem weapons they had previously and when the UN turned up to remove/destroy them there was plenty more and evidence of stuff being removed??

If so, hardly a glowing reference for the "It wasn't us guv" excuse really.

Syria can't be 'solved'....It will have to be broken up for a time at least into different regions....but the mess the supporters of inaction have caused is terrible.

Their inaction invited the Russians in who have been nothing like inactive.

Their inaction has lengthened the rule of ISIS along with its terrible price....a price for people they obviously don't care much about....well not enough to support any actual action to try to help them.

The old saying about 'when good people do nothing' has little greater application than with this situation.

Assad has used chemical weapons before, this is a fact, investigations of previous attacks pointed to Assad.
Sure this latest one does not make sense, the previous ones he was desperate as he was slowly losing the war.
But honestly, i dont care if it was him this time, he has done it multiple times before and should have been taken down then, but taking him down now is necessary.
Not that i think they will move to take him down, i think this is more of a shot across the bow.

Who in Trump's administration said that Assad could 'carry on'?

Last week:
“Our priority is no longer to sit and focus on getting Assad out,” Nikki Haley, US ambassador to UN

"I think the longer term status of President Assad will be decided by the Syrian people," Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State

Plus assorted comments from the State Dept (Mark Toner for example)

I don't think this amounts to an assurance that Assad can 'carry on' as before.

I think perhaps this reading is apart of the usual narrative where the left look for any negative interpretation or worse reading of events possible to attack an administration they don't like.....Just like the tea party before them...and indeed Trump himself.

In reality I would say that those comments amount to a realization that Assad....who will probably will end up ruling over a section of Syria....has to be apart of the negotiations because he represents a section of Syrian society who know that if the anti-Assad forces take over that their heads are for the chopping block....Perhaps in some areas it would be literally.

Unless we want to fight Russia that's just a common sense reality.

Those who voted for inaction a few years ago unfortunately left us with few options.

Ever thought of the WOMD from Iraq slipping over the border to Syria before NATO could check the country for illegal stuff? Perhaps that is why when we checked for Saddam's WOMD stock we could not find any only the empty dumps and factories in the desert. You must remember Saddam used gas on his own people killing thousands. Worth thinking about in my opinion.

Who else has aircraft able to fly in that airspace to drop that chemical? Pray tell? Assad? Russia? USA? Britain?

Some lunatic Arab media think the Americans did it for a reason to strike on Assad's airbase.

Yep, ISIS doesn't have its own air force (although NATO planes have run interference for them in the past.) Seeing as the last "Syrian Regime" chemical attack actually turned out to be "rebels" using gear routed to them by Turkey, one wonders if the rebels had a stockpile that got hit by the Syrians.

Just as unbelievable as a sitting-pretty Assad gassing his own people, eh?
