The program tonight.

I don't know what to say. It had me in tears throughout much of it. It upset me immensely, I really shouldn't have watched it, but I knew I would have to. I'm left feeling so very hollow and defeated by the sickness of this vile filthy world of perverts and evil, but my absolute and total admiration of the Wells family gives me something positive to cling to. Something to continue to strive for. Wonderful, strong, good people. The unimportant ordinary backbone of this island.

But I'm left feeling that with the aid of well-meaning liberal ideals and human rights for all no matter what; evil is winning the battle.

Petealiator, I'm not sure whether you're saying that all paedophiles or just Ian Huntley, or both, are evil so I'll approach this from two angles. Firstly, although the court found Huntley to be guilty and although the evidence may be stacked against him, the sad truth is that only Ian Huntley knows what happened that tragic day. The deaths of the two girls may have been a genuine accident, and without knowing what went on, we cannot judge Huntley and decide him to be evil on that basis.

Secondly, this is a problem of our own making - if paedophiles weren't so reviled by society then they wouldn't turn to such desperate measures. Paedophiles need to be helped not loathed. Tabloid papers whipping up frenzies and encouraging lynch mobs solves nothing, and it only makes the problem worse. If a paedophile knows that if he makes his problem public then he's going to be ostracised or worse, then he's better off keeping it a secret and letting it gnaw at him from the inside until one day he snaps with terrible consequences. We need to show them compassion and humanity, not seek to destroy them - it is not a conscious decision on a paedophile's part to become attracted to young children, they do not wake up one day and decide to find children arousing. Rather it would appear to be a mental problem, perhaps stemming from being abused as a child. It is not their fault, and we must acknowledge that.

The programme brought it all home again.

How both girl's parents have conducted themselves throughout the whole thing. Never being able to get anywhere close to realising what they must have gone/are going through.

No matter how many times i hear the horrible details of it all, it still seems so unreal, the girls were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and some evil thing took advantage.

I have never really gone for the "hangings too good" thinking, but it really hit home. Why should Huntley still be breathing when he killed those girls, but executing him just doesn't seem to be the way to get justice - what other way is there to make him pay?

I'm sorry mate, but the way I feel at the moment, my only response to your sickening hand-wringing liberal post can be f*** OFF YOU HEARTLESS c***! When I made my post I was talking from the heart, upset and low, the last thing I needed to read was that s***! So you go off and do your student stuff, smoke some dope, write some s*** meaningless poetry, feel really self-righteous and good about yourself, I'll go to bed and feel even more depressed and maybe I'll apologise for my crass post in the morning before I go to work, but then maybe I won't, you people grind me down and I'm tired, good night all!

Weirder stuff has happened to me, although admittedly with less dire consequences as a result. But Huntley could have had an excellent explanation and you'd still hate him because you've presupposed him to be evil and guilty because you're revulsed by paedophiles.

Absolute rubbish.

You said in your original post that "The deaths of the two girls may have been a genuine accident, and without knowing what went on, we cannot judge Huntley and decide him to be evil on that basis."

But we can judge him, and thats exactly what the law of the land does - judge someone on the available evidence. He was found guilty after having a fair trial, because thats what we do.

And i never said he was evil. I said that i was unsure as to what punishment he should receive for the crimes that he undoubtedly did commit.

And i never said he was guilty just because i'm revulsed by paedophiles. The jury said he was guilty and quite frankly i can't understand how any right minded and normal person could not agree with that jury having heard the evidence.

I'm sorry if you don't like what I said, and maybe I was being preachy and moralistic but that was just what I believe. I don't deny that the Soham murders were a terrible, terrible thing. I don't deny that any instance of child abuse, rape or murder is utterly unforgivable but I simply don't, can't, believe that the best way to react to these tragedies is with yet more hatred, bitterness and a desire to strike out with a thirst for vengeance. But it appears that you do, as do many others, and that saddens me. In the last few years my belief in humankind has been shaken - when I look around I see nothing but hatred and destruction everywhere. I'm sorry for not wanting to give in to that, it would probably be easier to after all, but I won't. And it's fine if you want to dismiss all this as the lefty liberal didactic ramblings of a smug little self-righteous pot-smoking student, in fact go right ahead. But it won't change what I believe. Yes, sh*tty things happen in this world, but if you're telling me that the best way to respond to them is with even more sh*t, then quite frankly you can f*ck right off. And now I'm going to go to bed and fell even more deoressed too.

hmmm, maybe, but it is a conscious decision for a paedophile to rape and kill two young girls with their whole lives ahead of them, therefore, huntley the piece of nob cheese should be burnt alive

sorry but your talking alot of b*llocks mate

Obviously if sex with women above the age of 16 was outlawed tomorrow you'd have the strength of mind to go your whole life without giving in to your sexual desires. And obviously you'd be able to cope with knowing that if anyone ever found out your secret you'd have a lynch mob round your house in seconds wanting to tear you limb from limb. You can't imagine what it must feel like to have that gnawing away inside you for years, and you can't imagine what lengths that would drive you to. Obviously I don't condone rape or murder but let's face it, society drives them to it.

I didn't have the courage to watch the programme. I've got 2 teenage children and as a father, I don't know how I would cope in the Wells's situation.

Pete you summed it up. We reap what we sow ultimately...and we have sown people like Despotic Banana. The evidence against Huntley was overwhelming, there was no credibility in his defence, and yet we have someone on this site making a case for the man. Unbelievable.
