Interesting to hear on this mornings today programme that Philip Hammond is planning to borrow £2 billion to invest in a housebuilding programme. Strange how Corbyn was castigated for suggesting such a thing. Of course it's yet to transpire whether Hammond's plans are for affordable social/council housing...

The £2 Billion is part of a £5 billion spend on a Housebuilding Programme.Corbyn and McDonnell were castigated for their overall spending policies. But they can say what they like, they will never get elected to put their plans into operation.

That said, I can see why people would see it as crass.

Edit: If I thought the stuff was taking the piss, I'd be right behind you and say it was wrong, but I don't think it is. You stated the stuff sold was selling mugs with comments like maim a British soldier and free an artificial limb It was a bit different to that.

Soooo Nick where are the proceeds going to, of the highly offensive merchandise ? are they going to any veterans fund ?

It was rhetorical, he hasn't.

By the way, whilst I grew up during Maggie and I am a fan of hers (yes she had her flaws), I am not a Tory per se, I consider myself more centre right. My family had a long tradition of liberalism long before Jeremy Thorpe was hiring hit men. My Grandfather worked for that pillar of society Lloyd George

I don't know mate. One would hope so.
It's a crying shame that veterans have to rely on charity - 6th richest nation in the world and all...

Source.

There is no source, because there is nothing to prove he has. This is spite of him saying he will prove it.

The onus is now on him

Hammond has effectively stopped the government commitment to cutting the deficit - he's kicked it indefinitely down the road.

That is a big story.

It either shows that the Tories can't be trusted to try and balance the books any more. Or it shows that the Tories this they are sufficiently trusted compared to the opposition to abandon their commitment to cutting the deficit.

Either way it was not a fully costed spending policy. It is borrowing or taxing to fund this spending.

I'd argue that Hammond's invest for growth, and it's not just in housing, should not only be welcomed (depending on the issue of affordable social housing), plans show that Corbyn is an effective leader as it was he that brought the issues to the fore. That's not to mention other tory policies that have been reigned back.
