The next global recession will blow in probably around 2020 and, as you say, there is nothing an incumbent government can do about it.

Because of the 2017 elections across Europe, most opposition parties are Eurosceptic. As we all know, it s far easier to be in opposition than in power, whoever you are, and so when the next round of elections take place in France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Austria etc etc they will most likely be on the back of a quite nasty global recession that will have seen Trump off as well. The unity of Europe will come under greater pressure than it did in 2011 and may not survive.

By that time, the UK will either be in or out. If we're still in, we'd have cemented ourselves into a period of unprecedented turmoil, similar I should guess, to the Soviet Union break up. If we're out, at least the effects of the disruption caused by leaving will be known.

I suspect if we could fast forward 15-20 years we'll be part of a European group consisting of the UK, Germany, France, Benelux countries and Spain and Italy. Bit like the original Common Market really.

Regards M and interesting points about how things may look.

The Labour party and Momentum got a lot of kudos at the last election for their social media campaign. It now turns out they had a little help from Moscow. Rather ironic considering how excited the left have been about Trump's election win and fake news.

Will they be as angry about Russian interference in our general election?

I couldn't find this story on the main BBC news website which is strange as they seem very interested in fake news and normally make them headline stories. However I did find a fake news story about misleading reviews on products like kettles on Amazon. Nice to see the BBC has its priorities right. One thing I have noticed about the BBC is it either ignores certain stories or buries them in the website so you have to go looking for them.

Meanwhile the Tories are trying to revamp their social media campaign. Perhaps a phone call to Moscow for assistance?

Far too many economic indicators/precedents suggest that it'll 'land' sooner than that.
Historically low interest rates coupled with years upon years of debt-laden QE (printed from thin-air) have failed dismally to stimulate any kind of growth in real terms.

Watch the bond market.

If Labour are elected under Corbyn all we will see is inflation fueled by pay rises to the big unions just like the 70's under Callaghan.
You can blame Bretton Woods for the instability of the pound back then but you can't blame it for the relationship between Labour and the Unions which will return us to the bad old days with Len McClusky and the like effectively calling the shots.

But this is boom and bust. If 2008 can't take the system down nothing can.

The taxpayer is the lender of last resort.

The number of people who believe in Corbyn amazes me. I know there's a lot of young people in there who have never experienced living in a socialistic society and only have warm worded rhetoric and concepts....but still.

The number of people who don't understand basic economics is amazing. I recommend they read Sowell's book on it.

Personally, a part of me is hoping that Corbyn and the far left actually win and gain office. Because it's at that point that all these morons have to answer for the mess.

I know they will finger point and deflect when that happens but the rational amongst them will have to take their medicine. A Corbyn will give rise to another Thatcher figure and the cycle will repeat itself similar to the seventies.

Hang on....who am I kidding, these aren't self reflective individuals. No, instead the only satisfaction will be in seeing their worldviews being shown for the emotive driven BS that they are.

I think we should be wary of accusations of Russia being involved with the Labour party as it has been found to be false before [Link]

What nearly a 100 years ago?

No one with half a brain needs to worry about malicious foreign interest affecting the Labour party. Corbyn hates the British state anyway. If a foreign power has had any beef with it he's never supported the British state.

Ah yes. Rationality. Self-reflection. Because at the moment, the enlightened policy makers at the helm of our society have seen in-work poverty increase to 3.8 million. Productivity remains at historic lows, growth has completely stagnated despite near-0 interest rates, hospitals don't have enough beds in A&E, most young people can't afford a property and every indicator points to the fact that one more tumult in global markets will cause this country to spiral back in to recession.

If we were living under a Labour government with those figures people would undoubtedly be saying 'well this is what you get with socialism'. But because it's the tories, who are meant to be the pragmatists, these figures must simply be bizarre anomalies or administrative errors. How about a little self-reflection on your part Stirling? Or is it going to be finger pointing and deflection?

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Russian Government made clear its support for the Conservative Party in the 2017 UK General Election, with the Russian Embassy in London promoting their ideological “convergence” and Theresa May’s “strong and stable” slogan on Twitter.

For what it is worth IMO Russia blaming is tosh.

I am not aware of any interference in my vote from Russia.

(However they may have sent West Brom down).

Once again you continue to ignore the GLOBAL ENERGY CRISIS of the 70's and still haven't truly grasped the real effect (the banks printing like mad!) that the end of Bretton-Woods has had on global economies since.
Inflation fuelled by funds directed to the Unions? LMFAO

That's ok as I'll worry as I have a full brain. You obviously don't worry so I guess by your own statement you only have half a brain?
