Why? I think an extension followed by a GE is much more likely.

If this "final offer" is rejected, as seems inevitable to me, then it seems that the gap is far too large in basic understanding of what is required for there to be any realistic prospect of tweaks making any difference. I truly hope I am wrong.

If I am right then we will be down to finding out what Parliament will decide to do. This government are not in control of matters.

Elsewhere in this thread I have read suggestions that as EU law is superior to UK law that the triggering of Article 50 would stand above the requirements of the Benn Act. This is the relevant clause in Article 50:-

"3. The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement or, failing that, two years after the notification referred to in paragraph 2, unless the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period."

The key phrase being "in agreement with the Member State concerned".

UK law applies to all, so if the PM is required to ask for an extension then he is obliged by law to do so. That applies whether Johnson is still the PM or has been replaced.

My conclusion therefore is that this is all electioneering and not a serious attempt at finding a deal. Johnson is setting up the scene (choreographed by his stage designer Cummings) ready for his next big performance as the martyr who tried to do what "we" wanted, but was blocked at every turn. This is all about him. He is entertaining in an Arthur Daley kind of way but I wouldn't buy a car from him either.

It may not be serious for us but it certainly is for NI people, who would see their economy and prosperity suffer just for a stitch-up by Johnson and Foster.

NI people, republicans and unionist, voted by a substantial majority not to leave the EU, the DUP is the only party that did and has also not signed up to the GFA.

The EU has been quick to realise that this is a sweetener for the DUP and will not allow them free reign to make future choices with no reference to anyone but themselves.

As for the HOC, well they may well feel able to vote such a deal through, as it is not effecting them is it?

Not a false picture though is it?

No doubt the more dim witted remainers will start spouting off that it was Boris's plan all along as he's backed by an international smuggling ring

Smuggling goes on all over the place.
Duty free for one gets sold for a mark up.
All that's lost is tax as someone has to buy from someone to sell to someone else.
That will happen early doors but eventually it will calm down.

Entirely false.

He isn't doing what "we" wanted. He is attempting to do what some of you want.

So not what you want. That’s politics.

I trust you mean that Johnson's project is "shyte"!

I came across this article from 2016 whilst researching how Article 50 is actually implemented. As it comes from the "European Law Monitor" I think it probably approaches things pretty objectively, as the other articles there seem to confirm. I think it's worth reading now as it seems to be the blueprint followed by the ultra Brexiteers. Many of the claims identified there as untrue are now held, and repeated endlessly as fact, by those who support a "no deal" Brexit. As the "leave" campaign was masterminded by Cummings who is now masterminding the Johnson approach it isn't too hard to see the common thread.

Whatever your view of the EU this kind of approach to informing the people needs to be condemned. Employing a propagandist to mislead is resonant of the 1930s.

What I want doesn't matter. Nor does what you want.

It's what we want that does. Who judges that?

The government or Parliament?

You know my answer!
