Even the EU vote thread gets hijacked by race.

Is nothing sacred ?

925 pages and who knows where it will end (could go on for years like brexit).

Well, the UK referendum in 2016 was very largely based on race and the hatred of foreigners by a very large percentage of older generations. SO, not really hijacked at all but highlighting the core reason for so many voting the way they did.

What a load of cobblers.

No-one really knows why people voted as they did but speaking as a member of the older generation who voted Brexit a supposed hatred of foreigners had nothing to do with it

Yep, but nearly all positives for the EU yet again. More u-turns by the UK government, NI to remain in the customs union and single market. Theresa May said a couple of weeks ago that would 'never be acceptable', er, looks like it is now. Farage and his supporters must be bursting blood vessels at today's news. Well actually, only his supporters as Farage himself has used the whole 'brexit' show as a decoy to stay in the limelight lining his pockets at the expense of UK citizens and their future generations.

I really didn't see the EU being in such total control of the utter mess created by those voting to leave, amazing situation.

It's easy to pour scorn on these things I guess to suit our agenda....but progress is progress and anyone thinking it'd be a hard Brexit was only kidding themselves...there is too much to lose on either side for that to be the case.

Agreed. It was way down on my list of reasons, too.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I agree, it is a big piece of progress but much more to the advantage of the EU. For the UK, in relative terms it's massive progress compared to what the 'brexiteers' demanded, which was no transition, no deal with the EU. That clearly will not happen now and definitely not suit their agenda at all.

What hasn't been sorted out yet is the EU citizenship of those UK citizens who are living outside the UK and in the EU. They have a right to retain that status and I can see some huge court cases with massive litigation if that isn't resolved.

I can also see a new referendum being organised during the next 20 months, maybe taking place around the Autumn of 2020.

It all depends on what your perception of 'advantage' is...the fact we're leaving the EU (However it happens) would be considered an advantage by those that voted for it...but then again I appreciate you may have a skewed stance on the matter not residing here and clearly being subject to EU centric media etc etc...as always we'll make the best of what we have, the key is knowing there is now some certainty and timescales...that's by in large the biggest factor for business, as they like to KNOW what is planned so they can prepare for it...regardless of what it is that is planned.

"Mr Barnier said there was also an agreement on the rights of 4.5m EU citizens in the UK and the 1.2m UK citizens in the EU after Brexit, including giving EU citizens arriving in the UK during the transition the same rights and guarantees as those who arrive before Brexit."

Yes it has

Yes, I understand that statement, for example if a UK citizen is living in France they can continue living there with the same rights etc. Can that citizen then move to Germany, Netherlands or any other EU country and enjoy the same rights as any other EU citizen now that the UK citizen isn't an EU citizen anymore? Can that UK citizen in France enjoy the freedom of movement within the EU in the same way as all other EU citizens? Currently that UK citizen in France has freedom of movement and work rights across the EU, will they retain that after the UK leaves the EU?

What I am concerned with, as are many people, is how we can retain our european citizenship.

The idea of 'associate' membership retaining our benefits and culture is attractive so hopefully there will be something for those of us who want it.
