Doesn't really matter if someone was offended or not, as that's not what he's been charged with. Its with violations of the Religious and Racial Hatred Act.

The legal system works as an accusatory process so there is a emphasis on the prosecution to prove this is an offence under the Religious and Racial hatred act, and the defence to demonstrate it is not. I don't think they'll get a conviction unless he's got a lot of other s**t he's posted.

What about the murder of the Asian man in Glasgow? It seems inspired by his tolerance of another religion/culture? Not 'religiously prejudiced but a hate crime surely?

In the report I read they stated that the police had confirmed that the suspects they were looking for were 'other muslims' - sounds like a religion hate crime to me........ and a very sad one at that.

It's a law that.....while necessary....has to be carefully applied.....Here we have seen a silly wasting of Police time that anyone senior and sensible would have avoided. Perhaps this says more about the kind of people we have in position within the Police than anything else.

He then decided to put it out there on Twitter. Not only did he abuse an innocent passer by who was a lone woman, he then tried to belittle her on social media. Maybe had he picked on a six foot bloke I wouldn't feel the same. That is why I think he is a jumped up bully and why I don't like it that he is from Croydon and a Palace fan. I really don't want anyone to think he is reflective of our area and our fan base. It's all pretty simple. I am surprised others aren't also p*ssed off, or maybe they don't fancy posting on this thread due to the vehemence of the responses.

Yeah If you don't like a group purely because you are a bigot I don't think you should be able to express that. I don't think freedom of speech should extend to be able to express discrimination. If someone wants to say 'I don't like blacks, I don't like gays and I don't like Muslims' I don't think they should be allowed to. Think it all you want, there is nothing to be done about that, but say it and get punished.

I suppose Voltaire's 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it' just isn't a part of your belief system. Freedom of expression is very important in my view and what you personally regard as bigoted and discrimination aren't necessarily universal for everyone else......Who decides the bigot? Who decides what is cogent observation as opposed to discrimination. This is dangerous ground that in my view has to be trodden on carefully for a fair society to exist. The balance in the law has been the result of much debate and it's about right in my view.
