I'm amazed that anybody thinks it's such a great window. We are 2 players down, have little defensive cover and no replacement for Jedi. Last season Pardew was complaining the squad lacked depth, now it lacks players as well.

I am amazed anyone thinks it hasn't been great... Benteke, Remy, Tomkins, Townsend, Mandanda all signed and all likely to be in or near the first team.

Out of players who were in or near the first team who we have lost: Bolasie (for frankly silly money), Jedinak (who rarely started for us) and Gayle (ditto, plus we got silly money for him).

The problem last year was not simply 'depth' - which you're interpreting as 'bodies' - but 'quality in depth'. The quality of our squad is clearly higher now. YeS, our defensive COVER looks shaky, but 3 good to very good centre backs are better than 4 of which 2 are 'meh'. Plus our starting CBs ain't bad. And do we 'need' a replacement for Jedinak? He wasn't going to be first choice. There was a time when people were whingeing we had too many DMs! Cabaye and McArthur are our first choice with Ledley as a solid understudy. Plus we have other options involving formation tweaks.

We cannot do absolutely everything and solve all our problems in one window. A solid work in progress.

Of the 25 man squad that has had such a woeful run in 2016, 7 have gone (either released or sold for a combined total of approx £43 million) and 5 have come in for about £50 M.
We have obviously (in my opinion) brought in greater quality with the front 2 and in the worse case like for like with Mandanda, Townsend and eventually Tomkins.
No creative midfield player...? No replacement for Jedi?.... 2 bodies lighter in an under performing squad?
Have we done enough?

We've signed Benteke and Remy, and a French number 2 goal keeper.

Yes it's been a great window imo.

Also we haven't broken the bank which is so very important. Means that this window isn't a one off. Plenty of money to spend Jan if needed or better still have an even bigger war chest next summer.

Fantastic even if some areas still need strengthening. The bodies we've lost compared to those that have come in really are a step forward.

Of course!!

Two proper strikers signed
A great goalie signed (cheaply)
A winger signed with better end product than existing players
Decent young-ish defender

And it's still a possibility we'll get another across the line.

Its been a fantastic window, highlighting the continued growth of the club.

You forget that these players come with bigger wages etc, so its not the transfer fee that alone matters.

re this whole replacing Jedi thing. As you could see from the last match we are changing our playing style from 2 wide men (winning corners) with defensive CMs to pass and move with higher pressing from Midfield, poss under a 442 formation (though too early to tell). That has meant that the people who can play CM have changed whereas before we had Jed, Led, Cab and Mac. We now have Led, Cab, Mac and Punch. only 2 of who will play.

Also i think Remy will be the new left wing, but expected to cut in, while Soare overlaps, again thanks to mid pressing further up.

Happy happy JOY, JOY!

People who ignore the strength in depth problem have their heads in the sand as much as anyone. It's great we have shiny new toys up front and in goal but lack of squad depth will hurt us.

Three points in answer to that

The better the first team the more you can afford to have a mediocre squad player come in to cover.

Equally some of last season's first teamers are now those squad players.

Window isn't closed yet.

When you only want to sign upgrades then you will get rebuffed. I'd rather sign quality than sh*t squad fillers, we have enough of those.

Let's see how the season goes with whatever players we get in, I love these crystal ball posts.

Things that will be said when they get injured:

"We rely too much on Cabaye's passing"

"We rely too much on McArthur's energy"

"We rely too much on having 2 wingers"

I'll happily take that back if we pull a rabbit out of the hat in the next 4 hours or whatever it is but it doesn't look likely now.

Possibly butt with the calibre of player we have signed we should be able to cope with the odd injury.

Some people are very hard to please. There is no point buying players unless they are an improvement on what we have already.
In our first season back in the Premier League we bought unpteen players half of whom never made the first team.
You can't provide for every position at one go it takes time. But there is no denying the quality of players we have is improving season on season.
