Just an update for every one who commented. I have now been and seen all 3. The two mixed sex schools are all singing all dancing very slick glossy academies. All the facilities but they feel more akin to multi national corporation than a school. The all boys looked very old fashioned, run down, dirty BUT All the teachers have been there years and years as has the head. No glitz no glam what you see is what you get, get your head down and do your work and behave ethos. You get the feeling they ould know your child individually by name rather than him being a pupil number on a computer readout of performance tables. But it seems their measure of a boy is how well you play rugby and whether you run the cross country for your county. About as clear as mud and a bit of a headf*** choosing to be honest

Perhaps a comparison of their Offsted results would help you Michaela?

Been through all of those and the exam results. The boys is rated good, one academy is good the other is outstanding but its one of the harris academies and I have heard from several sources that staffing is a real problem. Can't find a breakdown which just shows boys achievements in the mixed schools. They don't have the data available and I have searched through the internet and cannot find it. Head at the all boys Said where girls out perform boys at gcse you really need to see the results for boys alone to make a fair comparison. Also asked questions regarding the staff turnover at the academy and was given the pc response that all schools are struggling to recruit and retain staff.

I'd assumed you'd have looked for them so apologies if I that was a little condescending....tough one for sure. I guess it all depends on what matters most to you? Results, anecdotal parents experiences, proximity?

This may help (if you haven't already tried it) [Link]

Thanks for that . Not seen that site before. Don't suppose you would have any idea where I find the data for results by grade for each subject for a school not just maths English science. One of the schools have them to me but I cannot find them for love nor money for the other two. Asked the school for them and they said we can't provide that kind of detailed date but if you write in we will, see what we can do. Sounds like a fob off to me. I am Not one of those pushy parents but I feel I need as much information in front of me while I try and come to a decision. A lot of people here get their second choices as everywhere is so over subscribed so I need to be very careful in what I put second. Many thanks x

This may also be of help [Link]

Also this which is the DofE website and you can download the data (along with the explanations as to what the terminology refers to) a bit extreme but you may get what you're after from it

An update to anyone who commented who's interested. Mine and my son's first choice was the mixed sex academy with attached 6th form second choice was the all boys.. Received THE email today and he has his first choice. Both very happy ..

(I am now panicking all over again hoping it's the right place for him and wishing I had a crystal ball to look into the next 7 years)

Thank you all once again

Good to hear that you are both happy.
Hope the seven years from September go well for him and you.

Glad you got your first choice, it's quiet a stressful thing. Having been through it with 3 kids. If you and your son liked the school then thats a good start. Good luck to him

For what it is worth, we sent my daughter to an all girls grammar school which she effectively chose and my son to a mixed grammar school. Her school did have mixing in the sixth form with the the local boys school.
This worked out fine as far as I can tell and after my experience in a dreadful 70's all boys comprehensive, I was determined that my son would not share the same fate.

Of course, how you get on anywhere is about the individual and the school, so there is no universal certainty .
