It's nice if you find one that can play a bit as well of course. What really counts is effectiveness in this position. Something that Jedi had in spades was effectiveness. Do I feel that Cabaye is as effect as a DM? Not really.

Rather than go with feeling probably best to go with stats: 5th most interceptions in the league last year (3rd highest for a midfielder).

I think his biggest issue is people expect him to do everything including score goals and get assists, which isn't his job. Everyday I see someone on this forum say we should play him behind the striker which is absolutely not his position.

He's class, and we are a trillion times better keeping the ball when he's on the pitch. Add that to the stat above and is a no brainer as to whether we are better with or without him.

can you find a stat on how many dead ball, free kicks, corners and so on he's flunked?

Surely the answer to that one is to relieve him of dead ball duty if, indeed, there is anyone better?

I'd say he should certainly be in the side, but let's leave him doing what he's best at.

If there is anyone better at set pieces then Pardew should have them take them e.g. penalties, where Benteke has missed 2 in 9, Cabaye has missed 2 in 6 (in the league, don't have cup stats)

After watching the highlights of our game against Boro. I feel our midfield is more balanced with mcarthur and Ledley with puncheon in the advanced role. Cabaye form has certainly drop since the turn of the year. I just feel he doesn't deserve his place back until he proves it.

Your thoughts

I agree with the OP

Whatever, very happy we have a player like Joe Ledley in our squad. Give his all, rarely lets us down and can play with the best (i.e Euro 2016 - Bale & Ramsey). More than good enough for our team...

Pro football is a bit like a computer. Most people undestand and use about 5% of what a computer offers.
It's the same with pro footie. reading all thes posts, anyone would think we've got some pretty good cover should AP take a hike.
The truth is probably no posters here have anything like the knowledge of the pro game to make any sort of objective criticism of players or management.
Pro football has got so much depth to it a bit like the computer that very few fans can grasp the in depth position.
OK I hear it, you are all just having fun on here which is cool. But appreciate we have a top level manager, and chairman and we suddenly have a whole load of quality players at our disposal in our much improved squad.
Let AP work his magic in bringing out the players strongest assets and watch the results. even with our on going set backs re injuries and accident I remain very optimistic for our on going advance and development.
Things here at the Palace are looking better than ever in my view.

Good that we have some options at last. Would like to see McArthur, Flamini & Ledley together in midfield. While I like Cabaye he's not spurred us on & didn't get the captaincy when it became available - when perhaps he would've been in consideration if his performances had merited it.
Let's find a good midfield solution & stick with the players as they learn to understand each other (barring injuries.)

We should be better with him - no doubt at all.
I wonder if the system we use doesn't work for him?
Also is Jimmy Mac too similar perhaps?
I would always rather he played even though he hasn't generally been as good as I thought he would be

Anyone who has ever been coached properly and played football and has half a brain can see that Cabye is by far our best central midfield player.

Cabaye and Mcarthur together is our best centre mid partnership without doubt (although we've not seen Flamini yet).

Our success for the first half of the season was hugely down to this partnership in the middle where both were comfortable on the ball in tight areas and we're always looking for short passes from our defenders. I think Cabaye was 2nd in for tackles and interceptions for a midfielder at Christmas behind only Kante (I might be slightly off with that stat) but a lot of his defensive work goes unnoticed because some of us (me included at the start of the season) expected him to be scoring all sorts of goals from all over the place.

When Mcarthur got injured, the Cabaye/Jedi partnership simply didn't work, and injuries to other key players certainly didn't help with results. As much of a warrior as Jedi is, he doesn't have the pace or agility to receive the balls in those tight areas which forced us to bypass the midfield more often and go direct. Although it must have been frustrating for Cabaye he certainly deserves some criticism for what seemed a lack of interest in a lot of games after Christmas when we needed him most.

I can't wait to see Cabaye/Mcarthur link up in the middle again but it would be harsh on Ledley to be dropped for the Stoke game after his solid performance last week.
