An interesting prediction on the aftermath of the result:

I've just got to the end of it and realised it ends in an advert, but it's still interesting point of view.

not remotely realistic. the guy seems pretty fixated on guns but that's not a symptom, not the cause of divisions.

How ironic!

Search YouTube for "John Oliver scandals", you might find it that way.

The more of this election coverage that I see or read about has me thinking that the American people will be voting for the least worst candidate - rather than someone that can genuinely make a difference (for the better). I watched the John Oliver 'scandals' piece on his show last night and neither really comes across as trustworthy, but then does any politician?

And as has been mentioned, the nature of the job and the influence means that favours will always be owed, so neither will be just in it for the good of the people.

Just for the comedy value it would be worth seeing what happened if Trump did win . . .

I work with loads of Americans and from what I can gleam it is (to be fair as it is often is in the UK) largely negative voting - the least worst option or the "not the other one" candidate.

Most are either voting for Hillary because she's not Trump/Trump is an 'ass', or Trump/Johnson/Stein because they aren't Hillary.

Clearly, they're not suburban Texans. While Houston-proper is solidly liberal by US standards (as are Austin and Dallas), the more populous suburbs are a seething, roiling volcano of white, middle class, wannabe upper class, Mrs Buckets. There's a name for them here: $50,000 millionaires.

They live in a house they will never pay off, driving late-model cars they will never pay off, living paycheck to paycheck while spanking their credit cards for all the trappings of wealth that they need to keep up appearances. Their kids will get a new car at 16 and will graduate high school, go to college and jump on the debt bandwagon by racking up student loans such that they're tens of thousands of dollars in debt before they've earned a penny.

These people vote for Trump because, when he talks about cutting taxes on the rich they think he means them. Conversely, when Clinton talks about giving relief to the middle classes, that's someone else, that's freeloaders who aren't them.

This demographic of people has been voting against its own self-interest ever since Reagan declared "it's morning in America" in 1980. After which he cut taxes on the (actually) rich, raised taxes on the middle class and set in motion 30 years of ever-expanding income inequality. And he's their hero, despite selling arms to Iran to fuel illegal drug wars in Central America and giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.

It's a breathtaking feat of cognitive dissonance, which is why you can probably detect a heavy dose of derision in this post. I work with these people, and it makes my heart sink that otherwise smart, big-hearted, friendly and unabashedly Christian people can embrace such vile and divisive politics.
