On his day, he's world class.

He so so so isn't close to world class.

How does he get into the squad when he can barely string 3-4 games along without an injury? I've seen guys playing 5 a side who are less selfish than him and they actually score goals!!

Someone has said it already but we need a manager who comes in, wipes the slate clean and picks players that actually have the desire to play and do well - almost a Mike Bassett situation

Some of those players have got to go now, Cahill is awful for England. Sturridge is a very good player to have as an option off the bench, I cannot see how he starts though, he is a luxury. Dier and Henderson as the midfield two is frighteningly ponderous. Walcott has never done it for England.

Apart from one night in Croatia.

Why is the England team so bad? I have several theories rattling around in my head:

-Today's young players have deep rooted psychological issues born from being mollycoddled and overhyped, meaning that when it comes to the crunch, they have no idea how to 'step up' or 'dig deep' and simply melt

-They're just not that good - despite the success of the Prem, maybe the talented foreign players carry the English players. There was no one on the pitch last night that looked the business or capable of running things

-No leadership or defined style of play. What is the 'England way'? Apparently the FA have a mantra for this but I'm damned if I can see it

-Players just don't care about playing for England because we've been crap for ages and it doesn't pay much

On another note, Henderson couldn't get rid of that armband quick enough when Rooney came on, hardly the conduct of a confident and in-control player.

They give their fees away. Maybe they need to go back to being the greedy so-and-sos that they are in order to perform?

I'm really struggling to express my disappointment in this latest England outfit. It is not a team; the defense is unsound and over-plays ,the attack is sterile and predictable;and the midfield is invisible.
Most good teams are based on a strong defense and the accent on going forward should be harnessed.Rose had a reasonable game but the rest should be "rested" until they could convince the manager via their league performances that they can defend to international standards. The attack has to be far more aggressive and I was pleased that Townsend showed this trait when he was given the chance.
How this poor side could top the division is beyond me!

For me we have talented players but fragile they need the foreigners around them to see them through the tough times and to some degree 'take the blame' when things go wrong.

This group, as with the one for the Euros will see the very same tactics of Park the Bus being used by each and every opponent.

If we had an Italy or Holland then at least two games would be end to end (the on the break tactic would be unnecesary for those opponents) and we would have the space to do more, however each game we have played recently in the last two years is exactly the same (Park the Bus) and we play one player up front with two wide guys (in Walcott and Lingaard currently) and our Centre Forward keeps on dropping off into the midfield and seemingly laying it off to Stones or Cahill.

On a Saturday afternoon - name one Premier League Team that does that? Even against West Brom - who does that?

Last season, only Man Utd played as slowly as England do today, why don't we play like we do every Premier League match - especially against the Park the Bus merchants?

Each side now plays one up top, but he plays the whole game up top - he doesn't drop off (like Sturridge).

There is then either 5 across the middle or they play more of a 4-3-3.

I am not sure what we played yesterday (4 5 1 I think more than a 4 3 3), but can anyone think of any team in the Premier League that plays like England? No wonder the players suffer as it is a completely different system - Tottenham's players do not play like that ever unless they are playing for England.

And not to get confused with Long Ball Football, if it is not working then change it. Benteke for us has changed everything - put a good ball into the box and their defence is in trouble. Our Centre forward had dropped so far off that there was no one to cross it to other than midgets like Walcott and Lingard.

Even when Kane is available you can't just cross it in there - however if you had (God help me for saying this) a Carroll or a Crouch, then at least - having failed with the possession concept we could at least try something else.

The tactics that we should be using should be the tactics every Premier League Team uses against West Brom in this group - all the players know the drill, they play it often and we shouldn't be afraid to change the system when it is failing nor should we continue to play as though we might concede at any second.

ta very much.
what's more ludicrous, is that I missed the match last night - I saw the result and knew instantly what happenned..the problems are seemingly inbred into the english football culture.

I suspect that there is alot behind the fact that premiership players don't have the same desire to play for England as they do for their clubs (plus i wonder how much influence is put on them by their managers not to get injured - ie. go into full bloodied tackles).

Wouldn't it be interesting if the England manager put out a statement, by picking talented players outside the premiership for a game.

These players would be so delighted to play for England, and put in 100%.

Players like Will Hughes (Derby), Iforia & Hause (Wolves), Charlie Taylor (Leeds), Dale Stephens (brighton).

Not only are they playing for England, but also showing they can play at a higher level. Infact the Under-21's won 5-0 last night even though their manager is now managing the senior team.

A dream too far though.
