The manipulation of the housing market is what has fvcked over the younger generation big time. Those in charge of housing policy in the 80's- where the perniciousness began - should hang their heads in shame at their betrayal for the many millions of UK kids from back then who are in their 30's now, and with more to come behind them in their twenties, and the rest after them for the foreseeable future.

You can't blame Thatcher for the millions of immigrants who have come here and had kids in the last 20 years.

Yes rents are far too high but greater demand for housing has to be largely due to immigration.

The baby boomers and their kids had it good in some ways but overall the youth today have a relatively soft life.

Apart from being saddled with debt and very little chance of getting a house.

I agree with this to quite some degree - modern life is "soft" for many young people by some definitions for sure.

However, I was able to leave school at 16 with a clutch of O levels and get a job. I didn't have to go to Uni and pick up any form of debt - I actually started earning my own money at 16. I was also able, in my late 20's, to get a mortgage on a 1-bedroom starter home in the home counties on my own single wage plus my own savings.

Do you think any of that's possible for young people today? They may have access to the trappings of 21st century consumerism, but they are monumentally screwed compared with earlier generations.

The university debt issue is greatly exaggerated and mass immigration has caused the housing shortage above anything else. Tony Blair opened the flood gates.

I'm delighted that my kids have the opportunity to go to a Grammar school and University. My daughter has just graduated and I'm very happy that she didn't endure the crappy comprehensive education I got and the indifference to education that my parents and grandparents showed because their 'class' didn't aspire to higher education.
In the 80's when I left school, jobs were getting scarce and a life of low pay beckoned if you weren't qualified. If you want to do well in any era, you have to adapt and make the most of the prevailing conditions.
Certainly house prices are insane now and that is difficult for the young but again they must adapt as people have done before.

You do realise that Blair and "New Labour" are on the scum list for many whom you would consider "left wingers"? Pushing at an open door there.

New Labour hasn't been in power for years. What have more recent governments more to your political persuasion done to rebalance the terrible things they did regarding immigration, housing and social mobility?

I understand that, but recognising Blair for what he was with hindsight should be a warning for those are now treating Corbyn like he is the new messiah. Different politics, same bulls***.

The answer to the second part is not enough, but believing Corbyn to be the solution is a big mistake. Br careful what you wish for.

Interesting how politics seems to be a surrogate for football. Perhaps it's just another form of tribalism. But just remember which takes precedence, we are all Palace despite being lefty pinko/righty fascist/ginger/black/white/fat/old/young blah blah blah

Nothing to do then with people getting older, the baby boomers, the lack of replacement social housing for sold off Council stock, the deregulation of rent controls back in the 80's, the rise of feminism and the single female and their accommodation needs?

Ok. Let's just pretend we are all in No Immigrant Hrolf World where everything is perfect and the above points are just figments of imaginations.
