The Sun is going to explode. If we're still here, we're toast. Literally.

In 4.5 billion years. If we're not out beyond the solar system by that stage, we deserve oblivion. If we destroy ourselves before then, we deserve oblivion. Darwin.

4.5 billion years? So we'll still be arguing about Brexit and selling Mile Jedinak when the sun explodes then?

There's actually a theory as to why we haven't heard from more advanced alien races; it's because they destroy themselves long before they get the chance to reach out beyond their own star system.

Happy thoughts.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Well taken to that extreme everything is pointless. While we're here we should always aim to explore, in all directions.

I certainly agree that our ambitions seem to be way out of line with what has been achieved.
Man can't survive in space for long periods outside the Van Allen Belt and I'm still puzzled as to how a Moon trip was even possible although that might just be my lack of knowledge.
Long distance travel is obviously out unless we have far more sophisticated technology and living on other planets is a pipe dream right now.

What you hear from conspiracy theorists about the Van Allen belt is over the top. They take information from Nasa itself about Van Allen yet ignore everything else from them.....it's not very consistent.

There are ways of reducing the amount of exposure, plus the time spent within them is short.

Some of the guys who went on those Apollo moon missions are still with us in grand old age.

This is probably the largest danger. Though it wouldn't happen from nukes.

There are many, many theories.

Most of which seek to address the Fermi Paradox (broadly: "life should be thriving in the universe, but we see no evidence of it"). Some, as you say, is self-annihilation. Some is based on a "great filter" that prevents progression of intelligent life at an earlier stage - we were one of the few to pass through that filter.

One of the more obvious ones is the incredibly short timescale over which humans have existed, relative to the age of the universe...

Has no one else detected irony in the 'pointlessness of space travel' on a football forum? What's the point of anything? Utilitarianism dictates we should put 100% of our resources back into the welfare system and crime prevention. Pretty boring f***ing life imo

In fact stars like the Sun increase in luminosity at the rate of about 10% per billion years, so our lease will expire long before the Sun does.

Yep.....AI research and development is a much more likely and sooner mode of extinction.

Not saying we should look to restrict it...as that is pointless but we need to get there first before those who would use it against us....and then create its antidote...It's the next item in the space race along with killer disease spread.....This is a joyful and optimistic isn't it?

The future may not be that bright for the vulnerable.....but the sun is the least of our worries.
